United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is Hiring a Manager, Corporate Communications Near Richmond, VA

About The Position Position Description As the Corporate Communications Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing integrated communication strategies that convey the impactful work carried out by UNOS and the OPTN to UNOS staff, UNOS members and the public. Your role encompasses both internal and external communication, reaching employees, UNOS members, media, and the general public. Additionally, you will provide essential support for executive communications and government affairs, advocating on behalf of UNOS and the transplant community.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Comprehensive Communication Strategies: Work closely with UNOS department leadership and staff to understand business priorities and develop proactive, integrated communications plans to support them.
  • Membership Support: Develop and execute communications strategies that provide education and resources to support UNOS members, which include, but are not limited to, transplant hospitals, organ procurement organizations and histocompatibility labs. Deploy web and email marketing tactics to effectively reach members.
  • Change Management: Support change initiatives by helping employees and the public understand the reasons behind changes, addressing concerns, and ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Executive Communication: Develop and deploy executive communications strategies that effectively convey the vision, mission, and key messages of UNOS through its leadership team to employees and external audiences.
  • Crisis Communications Management: Lead crisis communications planning, response, and recovery efforts, ensuring timely and effective communication during challenging situations.
  • Government Affairs Support: Develop communications strategies to support government affairs activities and advocate on behalf of UNOS, the transplant community, and the patients we serve.
  • Media Relations: Strengthen relationships with reporters, proactively educate them about UNOS's activities, and respond to emerging issues and opportunities in the media landscape.
  • Media Training: Provide media training and prepare UNOS spokespersons, as well as community speakers, for interviews and external outreach.
  • External Speaking Opportunities: Identify and strategize external speaking opportunities to showcase UNOS's work and prepare UNOS representatives for presentations.
  • Internal Branding: Reinforce the organization's brand and culture among employees through consistent messaging and storytelling.
  • Content Marketing: Lead the development of compelling content and leverage across multiple channels including UNOS’ public websites, intranet, and social media.
  • Collaborative Alignment: Collaborate closely with creative services, branding and marketing, philanthropy and government relations teams to ensure messaging and brand alignment across the organization.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and manage a team, providing guidance to help team members achieve their individual, departmental, and organizational goals and foster their career growth.
  • Strategic Leadership: Participate as a key member of the Communications leadership team, contributing to defining the department's direction and priorities.
  • Performance Metrics: Work closely with the Director of Communications, Community Affairs and Philanthropy to establish success metrics and identify strategies for ongoing process improvement within the department and the organization.
Minimum Requirements
  • 5 years of experience in developing and leading media strategies, reputation management, internal communications, crisis communications, and communications strategies supporting government relations activities. Highly desired: 10 years' experience.
  • 2 years of people management experience is required, with 5 years preferred.
Critical Skills
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple projects effectively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Profound and evolving knowledge of effective communications practices and industry tools, particularly in media relations, community engagement, internal communications, and executive communications.
  • Ability to establish and nurture effective relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in leading communication strategies with cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and presentation skills for engaging diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment while building strong relationships with teams, peers, and clients.
  • Ability to evaluate and establish project requirements, priorities, staffing requirements, budgets, and timeframes for both large-scale efforts and quick-turnaround projects.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Capability to translate complex material into audience-appropriate communications.
  • A positive, can-do attitude and a commitment to fostering a fun and inclusive workplace environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Health care experience preferred
Education 4-year degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field, or an equivalent level of professional work experience required.(Master's degree preferred).
