ResponsibilitiesLab Coordination:
  • Expertly execute computer-aided design (CAD) software to create new devices and teach users CAD skills.
  • Program microcontrollers to facilitate creation of new health devices and teach basic coding, electronics, and circuitry to users.
  • Triage all projects and new devices created in the innovation lab for safety concerns prior to use outside of the lab. Including concerns related to: risk, compliance, biomed, infection prevention, clinical safety, ethics, and other specialty areas related to the specifics of each project.
  • Execute laser cutting and 3D printing jobs.
  • Act as a mentor in the design process for user prototypes.
  • Train users on the use of the various machines. Examples include (but not limited too): FDM 3D Printers, Resin Printers, laser cutter, injection molders, band saw, drill press, and other prototyping tools.
  • Identify material characteristics to suit the project example: skin safe vs food safe, sterilizable vs heat safe.
  • Teach both basic safety courses and advanced courses covering all the makerspace equipment to all users of the makerspace.
  • Host workshops to introduce and teach new technologies and fabrication techniques to users who utilize the makerspace.
  • Identify when a user’s project has meet criteria for trial on hospital units and/or within departments.
  • Identify and address gaps in new prototyping methods and tools to ensure the ability to stay up to date with latest technology to create optimal variety of resources.
  • Coordinate the use of the makerspace for hospital and unit specific meetings.
  • Facilitate tours to external community partners.
  • Facilitate use of the makerspace with local STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) teams.
  • Create showcase prototypes of user’s projects for display purposes.
  • Maintain cloud-database of projects and reporting metrics.
Communication
  • Collaborate with hospital administrators/communications team to promote the makerspace within the hospital and external parties.
  • Create flyers showcasing work of users.Connect users with other users who have similar projects or who may benefit from collaborative work.
Inventory/Supply Coordination
  • Maintain an inventory of material and communicate when new material is required.
  • Identify new materials that may be utilized in rapid prototyping sessions.
  • Determine appropriate par levels for materials stocked in lab to optimize use and prevent expiration.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors in a technical field.
  • Experience operating 3D printers, laser cutters and other desktop fabrication tools.
  • Experience operating machinery such as drill press, bandsaw, hand tools, and associated materials.
  • Experience with CAD.
  • Experience utilizing the design process to create prototypes.
  • Experience prototyping with microcontrollers: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc.
  • Excellent ability to diagnose problems, build and repair machines, make things, learn new skills, think critically, fail early and fast, etc.
  • Competency in safe construction, making, woodworking, electronics, and digital design concepts and processes and the ability to help others in both a formal setting and as casual advice.
  • Demonstrated competency with 3D CAD software, preferably Solid works and/or Autodesk Inventor.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with other health care team members
  • Working knowledge of 2D editing software such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, etc.
  • Dynamic self-starter with a positive, collaborative, and well-organized work style.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills/information and take on new tasks.
  • Proven ability to build prototyping competence in beginner Makerspace users.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills and an ability to use multiple tools and skills when problem solving, both digital as well as conventional.
  • Writes, reads, and comprehends fluent English.
  • Demonstrates strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Must be able to successfully complete basic and advanced departmental computer training.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the manual and technical skills required to perform basic and advanced computer operations.
  • Must be able to work well with all customers, co-workers and multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Maintain a creative, safe, clean, and fun work environment for members.
  • Maintain all Makerspace materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to recognize projects that do not meet requirements to be made in the makerspace.
  • Understanding the feasibility of a user’s idea and utilizing the makerspace to create.
  • Understanding of material composition for safety in the lab example: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) should not be cut utilizing the laser cutter as it emits a toxic gas.
  • Maintain open communication with internal and external lab users.
