University Houston is Hiring a Research Scholar (Research Scientist) - Health Law Near Houston, TX

The University of Houston Law Center (UHLC) invites applicants for a non-tenure track (NTT) Research Scientist (Research Scholar) position.

This position is intended for an attorney with an interest in health law and policy research and scholarship. Applicants are not expected to have a STEM background or prior research experience.

The position’s responsibilities include: Under the supervision of the Co-Directors of the Health Law & Policy Institute (HLPI), the research scholar will serve as the Principal Investigator on the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) tobacco grant project and maintain the project’s smoke-free ordinance database; support HLPI’s portfolio of grant-funded research and identify additional grant and other funding opportunities; biennially update the Control Measures and Public Health Emergencies: A Texas Bench Book and participate in stakeholder meetings on control measures and public health emergencies; and oversee the Texas health legislative fellows program. The Research Scholar also will assist the HLPI Co-Directors and Program Director with planning events such as a lecture series and national conferences, developing marketing and promotional materials, fundraising, and other activities that support HLPI’s mission as assigned. At the discretion of the Co-Directors, the Research Scholar will have opportunities to attend national health conferences on behalf of HLPI; conduct and present research in health law, policy, and ethics; and build interdisciplinary relationships with the University of Houston Medical School, other University of Houston health programs, the Texas Medical Center, and other health policy/research organizations. Research Scholars have no regular teaching obligations at the Law Center but may be given an opportunity to teach special courses on an adjunct basis. For more information about the Law Center's health law program, see: http://www.law.uh.edu/healthlaw/.

The successful candidate appointed to the position must, at a minimum, hold a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Candidates with educational or practical experience with health law and policy and experience with data management are particularly encouraged to apply. An additional advanced degree, such as an M.P.H. or Ph.D., in a health policy-related field or economics and previous experience with grant writing or fundraising is preferred but not required.

As a non-tenure-track (NTT) position, the appointee will accrue no time toward tenure at the University of Houston. The Research Scientist title is a non-promotion-eligible NTT position, so the position does not accrue time toward promotion or a renewable employment agreement in a promotion-eligible NTT position. For more information on NTT positions, see the University of Houston’s NTT Faculty Policy, available at this link: http://www.uh.edu/provost/faculty/current/non-tenure-track.

This search is administratively coordinated by the Law Center’s Health Law & Policy Institute. For any additional questions or information relating to this posting please contact Program Director April F. Moreno (afmoreno@uh.edu). Should your listed references be contacted, they will be asked to submit a letter of reference via email attachment.
This non-tenure track appointment will have no presumption of renewal. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience.
