The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks an exceptional candidate to support the nation’s flagship ice-capable research vessel, the R/V Sikuliaq. Join our team and dive into the exciting world of cutting-edge marine research!

R/V Sikuliaq, pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world, is able to break ice up to 2.5 feet thick. Constructed in Marinette, Wisconsin, Sikuliaq is homeported in Seward, Alaska, at UAF's Seward Marine Center. The ship has a full load displacement of 4,215 LT's, and the diesel electric propulsion system operation utilizes an integrated power plant concept, providing 5750hp of propulsion power through frequency drives and a/c main motors to two fully azimuthing z-drives.

As a Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED), you will assist with watch standing, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of shipboard equipment and systems. You will also facilitate and support the scientific mission of each voyage and comply with, participate in, and promote the vessel's safety management program.

The ideal candidate will have experience with proper operation of a wide range of vessel systems, operational knowledge of fuel oil bunkering, and experience with and practice of good safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess the following: a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as an QMED Oiler, unexpired U.S. Passport, unexpired TWIC card, unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG medical certification, and a valid drivers license. Applicants must have all applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. Applicants must also be able to pass a pre-employment DOT drug test.

Position Details:

This position is located at sea aboard the R/V Sikuliaq, wherever it may be operating. This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77, based on education and experience.
