Summary of Job Duties:

A Research Technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Melda Onal at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology (https://physiology.uams.edu/) to study skeletal biology. The technician will participate in the two ongoing projects: one focused on studying the role of different forms of autophagy and their roles in skeletal biology, the second focused on development of CRISPR interference murine models for loss of function studies.


Qualifications:

  • HS/GED plus 2 years experience in performing tests in a research laboratory

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or related field plus two years related experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of the equipment used in a research laboratory.
  • Be willing to work with, handle, and perform experiments involving laboratory mice.
  • Be able to keep organized laboratory records and notes.
  • Have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Should not have prior allergies to laboratory mice.
  • Should be able to work while sitting or standing and should be able to lift up to 10lbs.
  • Able to work comfortably with mice.
  • Experience with cell culture is a must.
  • Western blot and IF/IHC experience is a plus.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

General laboratory maintenance including:

  • Placing orders (obtaining quotes, filling & submitting ordering forms, keeping inventory of what is received)
  • Maintaining electronic records of laboratory inventories (reagents and supplies)
  • Making stock reagents, media and buffers

Performing research experiments, preparing reports including:

  • Performing and assisting with experiments as requested by the PI,
  • Processing, analyzing and presenting data as directed by the PI
  • Maintenance of experimental records
  • Using of in vitro and ex vivo approaches using primary cells and established cell lines.
  • Management of genetically modified mice colonies.
  • Application of in vivo studies in established mouse models of skeletal diseases.
  • Basic molecular and cell biology techniques to be used will include cell culture, transfections, Western Blots, qRT-PCR, fluorescent microscopy, Flow cytometry, IHC etc. The applicant will also help maintain murine colonies (weaning and genotyping, record keeping, DEXA BMD scans etc.) and perform in vivo and ex vivo bone biology experiments (dissection of bones, isolation of bone cells and their ex vivo cultures).

Training new laboratory personnel and overseeing laboratory safety

  • Training of students in operation of laboratory and basic techniques
  • Overseeing laboratory compliance with the University, State and Federal guidelines for the safe operation of a laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.
