Departmental Overview
The Master of Computational Social Science (MaCSS) is a one-year, on-campus program that will provide students with practical skills for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing social data. Social data are simply data about people, groups, organizations, and their interactions from surveys and censuses, company websites, store loyalty cards, cell-phone records, Twitter posts, internet searches, etc. MaCSS graduates will be able to work as analysts and data specialists in business, non-profit, and government settings.
Administratively, the MaCSS program will be housed in the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs in the College of Letters and Science. It will be overseen by a Faculty Director, an Executive Director, and a Graduate Group. They will be assisted by a Graduate Student Affairs Officer (GSAO) and two staff who focus on career development and placement.

Responsibilities
Strategic and operational management; recommend program and policy changes.
Collaborates with inter-unit outreach to: Social Science departments and interdisciplinary programs; the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS); and the professional schools. Design job descriptions for staff and teaching assistants (Graduate Student Instructors, aka GSIs); manage the HR approval process; manage job postings and outreach to recruit excellent staff and GSIs. Recruit and hire faculty - both ladder/Senate faculty and lecturers from campus and/or industry or government. Identify and contact industry, government organizations, and nongovernmental organizations that are willing to provide data for capstone projects. Fundraise for additional fellowships. Recruit an Industry Advisory Board: senior people from industry and government who oversee data analytics and who may be willing to hire program graduates.
Manage financial resources:
Oversee all accounting, including compensation. Oversee non-compensation budget planning and implementation. Manage contracts with Summer Session. Manage contracts with vendors. Oversee fundraising: donations for fellowships, for teaching awards, for career experiences, and so forth. Coordinate with the GG to select students for merit and need fellowships; distribute fellowships.
Engage with and help coordinate the faculty (ladder faculty and lecturers, with guest speakers from industry and government) who teach in the program:
Manage process with the FD and GG recruit and socialize faculty into the program's unique integration of computing tools and techniques, applied statistics, and social science. Recruit GSIs to help faculty with course development and execution. Guide faculty to supervise GSIs; evaluate GSI performance. Provide support to faculty who team-teach courses (e.g., Computational Analysis of Individuals and Small Groups; Computational Analysis of Regions and Organizations) coordinate materials and activities. Provide support and guidance to FD design course assessment tools to provide feedback that will guide faculty course revisions.
Manage staff to optimize student experience:
3 staff people at full scale: 1 Program Advisor and 2 Career Development Professionals. Oversee staff hiring (in collaboration with the FD and GG). Conduct staff and GSI performance appraisals and salary actions. Manage other staff HR issues. Oversee marketing efforts to both prospective employers and students by Career Development Professionals; hire vendor to design website (& MCSS logo), brochures, etc; visit job fairs and university/college campuses to recruit students (& inform career advisors about the program) Contribute to developing a team environment that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
Ability to work independently, while also managing staff. Ability to deal with the uncertainty of working in a startup operation that is nested in a very bureaucratic organization. Willingness to innovate, to take risks that things won't work out; willing to monitor outcomes and adjust actions as necessary. Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices, especially in a large bureaucratic organization. Effective communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with faculty, colleagues, students, team members, recruiters, and (potential) donors. Bachelor's degree in Social Science and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
MA in social science or applied social science. Experience with data analytics (to understand the content and intent of the MCSS curriculum).
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $95,000.00 - $110,000.00.
