Departmental Overview
Within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Berkeley Research Development Office (BRDO) works with faculty and research units across UC Berkeley, with a mission of helping to increase research funding while decreasing faculty burden in applying for it.
Specifically, BRDO facilitates the development of large and strategic research proposals, provides training and proposal-related resources to support faculty and other proposers across campus, finds and disseminates funding opportunities, and otherwise helps advance UC Berkeley's incredible portfolio of research efforts, initiatives, and centers.
BRDO is a small, dynamic team that works collaboratively and collegially internally, with the faculty, and with other units and partner institutions. Internally, we put a priority on staff support and development and work-life balance.

Responsibilities
Facilitates faculty and other teams in proposal development, including advising, organizing, writing, editing, and proofreading. Ensures clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work. Ensures alignment with the solicitation and the agency's research priorities and funding policies. Researches agency policies and details of specific solicitations and ensures proposal compliance. Plays significant roles in the conceptual formulation and writing of non-research components of proposals, including administration plans, management plans, and budget justifications. Interacts with teams to help advise, create calendars, and monitor progress; coordinating with research administrators. Applies expertise towards conceptualization and writing of broader impacts, education and outreach plans, and evaluation plans. Researches organizational structures, policies, procedures, and best practices relevant to broader impacts, education/outreach, broadening participation, and diversity/equity/inclusion (DEI). Maintains EndNote (or equivalent) library of relevant publications in STEM education, training, DEI, and broadening participation for use in proposal bibliographies. Collaborates with partners to coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of new programs and processes. Coordinates and collaborates with campus and external partners for broader impacts. Researches and summarizes best practices. Creates and maintains relevant and useful information about proposal development, broader impacts, education/training, and DEI for the BRDO website. Develops training materials and provides training sessions on such topics as developing an effective education plan, assessment of education projects, developing and sustaining effective broader impacts partnerships, etc. Makes high level contacts of a sensitive nature, internally and externally, requiring discretion and diplomacy in order to negotiate with or persuade officials to adopt the proposed solution or program / process recommendations. Develops figures and tables to support the proposal narrative, such as program progression/milestones, logic models, and organizational charts. Under limited supervision, researches, writes and/or edits material for a variety of publications for internal and external audiences, consulting with faculty as necessary. Performs ad hoc, analytical studies on a wide variety of complex policies, programs and issues. May advise on funding strategies and disseminate funding opportunities to research groups and faculty.
Required Qualifications
Experience in successfully supporting complex federal proposals, with an emphasis on broader impacts, broadening participation, education, DEI, and institutional advancement. Knowledge of broader impacts, graduate and undergraduate education, and DEI best practices in higher education and how these interact with academic research programs. Experience with proposals for faculty early career development and training grants. Familiarity with the academic research environment. Familiarity with federal agencies, especially NSF, NIH, and Department of Education. Strong skills in writing clear, engaging and persuasive text in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences while ensuring adherence to the funding sponsor's guidelines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Excellent collaboration skills, with a track record of working collaboratively with faculty and large teams. Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Education
Bachelor's degree or higher, plus at least three year's relevant experience in research or proposal development, planning/implementing broader impacts activities, or related work and/or equivalent training or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn the UC Berkeley campus, including its mission, structure, policies, and people. Expertise with charts and graphics. Advanced project management skills.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits. This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $82,400.00 - $116,900.00 (somewhat higher amounts may be possible, pending negotiation and approval).
