Transportation Services facilitates the access and mobility needs of the campus community through the coordination of efforts among Transportation Services’ units and with other campus departments and non-university entities and ensures that services are provided in a professional, efficient, and service-oriented manner. Additionally, the department plays an integral role in operating and maintaining the agricultural equipment used on campus.
Heavy Equipment Rental & Repair Shop provides operation of the campus heavy equipment fleet in support of general construction, transportation, material handling, ag service, animal care, underground utilities, academic/field research and Public Gardens. The equipment shop repairs/maintains the equipment for use by campus departments in addition to repairing campus department owned equipment.
Job SummaryUnder the direction of DoTS -Heavy Equipment Repair and Rental Shop Supervisor, serve as journey-level mechanic performing major and minor mechanic work on a variety of farm, construction and heavy equipment, including the department’s inventoried diverse fleet of over 150 pieces of equipment and various farming equipment for ag services departments. Record daily activity information for recharge purposes and preventative maintenance for department owned fleet.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Daily duties require walking, lifting to 70 lbs, stooping, crawling, pushing, climbing ladders, and bending.
  • Operate vehicles, equipment, and other devises for long periods for business and operational need.
  • Working outside in inclement weather. Work in confined and elevated areas.
  • Must participate in medical monitoring programs, medical surveillance, and physical examinations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work performed year-round outdoors in extreme weather conditions in an institutional setting. Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to; asbestos, PCB’s radioactive materials, industrial & laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials & wastes, biological hazards & other materials labeled hazardous.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class B Driver’s License and maintain participation in the CA DMV Pull Notice System.
  • Incumbent may work a rotating shift including morning, evening, and weekend work schedules. Ability to work in tight awkward spaces.
  • Incumbent may work additional hours beyond the standard workweek during peak times, special events or to cover shifts. Work occasional overtime or weekends as needed to complete unforeseen responsibilities to meet deadlines and keep priority deadlines in check.
  • Requires the use of protective equipment such as safety glasses, ear protection, protective clothing, gloves, etc. Must participate in medical monitoring programs, medical surveillance, and physical examinations. Must receive proper training from department safety officer in Injury Illness Protection Program, and Workers Protection Standards.
  • Must be able to respond to after-hour emergencies.
  • Cal-OSHA Safety Training Zone/Traffic Control Flagger.
  • Employee is personally responsible for following and adhering to Departmental Injury Illness Plan and University safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Within six months of the hire date: Forklift Safety Certificate.

Minimum Education/Experience: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience performing major mechanical overhauls, rebuilding of engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems. Knowledge of repair manuals, trade tools and equipment.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSA):
  • Knowledge of electronics and computer systems in newer fleet equipment. Knowledge of tests commonly used to diagnose electrical, hydraulic and drivetrain problems.
  • Knowledge of pneumatics as related to compressors, priority valves and braking systems. Skill in using test equipment including pressure gauge, flow meter, hand-held multi-meter and ODB scan tool.
  • Skill in using R134-freon evacuation and recharge equipment. Skill to disassemble and repair components including engine, transmission, and final drives. Skill to repair or replace clutch and brake systems. Skills to work effectively and efficiently with computer applications including Microsoft Office suite and fleet management software.
  • Skill to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics. Skill to repair hydraulically operated components such as rockshaft, remote valves, spool valves, and pilot systems. Skill to determine most appropriate method of repair given age, annual operating hours, and condition of machine.
  • Skill in inspection and maintenance of implements used in agriculture and construction. Skill to weld and braze.
  • Ability to accept and follow written and oral instructions from a variety of individuals and the capacity for long term memory of such instructions.
Preferred Education/Experience: PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Hands on experience with farm equipment to accommodate many different commodities and cultural practices. Knowledge of and experience operating agricultural equipment ranging from small walk behind power units to large track layers or wheel tractors, harvesters, discs, harrows, landplanes, planters, mulchers, incorporators, ridgers, swathers, balers etc.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSA):
  • Skill to use of machine tools including lathe, shear, ironworker and press brake. Ability to accurately measure, cut, and fit parts for the purpose of fabrication. Skill in use of welding and cutting equipment including stick, MIG, plasma and aluminum welding.
  • Skill to understand the difference between production and scientific research and adapt to new and innovative industry trends and concepts. Understanding the operation of research and production planters including cereal drills, plate planters, cone planters, vacuum planters, belt planters and carousel transplants all or part with electronic performance monitoring systems to assist with troubleshooting.
  • Skills to operate Global Positioning System, (GPS) for steering guidance on tractors and equipment. Must be able to setup, operate, program, recall data and diagnose problems.
  • Skills to calibrate all types of pesticide application methods including solid boom, ban, broadcast, layby, side dress, water run or air blast.
  • Ability to identify required repair parts. Ability to perform environmental protection requirements from Federal, State and Local agencies.
  • Knowledge of cultural practices including such operations as disking, landplaning, sub-soiling, bed preparation, bed shaping, pre-plant incorporation, seed planting, transplanting, cultivation, fertilizer applications and harvest of row crops, cereals and forage crops as required by researchers and department protocol.
