University of California Davis is Hiring a Laboratory Assistant (LAB AST 3) Near Davis, CA

Job SummaryAs a member of the department’s Instructional Support Unit this position provides support in setting up teaching laboratory experiments including equipment change-outs for physics laboratory demonstrations. Performs repair and maintenance on lower division lab equipment, along with building new equipment. Assists with the maintenance of the stockroom and master inventory.

  • Upper division college level coursework in physics or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Working knowledge and understanding of physics.
  • Skill to use basic hand and power tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, cutters, wrenches, power hand drill, saber saw, drill press, and soldering iron.
  • Skill in the use and set up of networked personal computers, including computer applications such as Word and Excel. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic computer problems.
  • Knowledge of safe practices in a laboratory environment.
  • Skill to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse population of individuals.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately despite frequent interruptions and under demands of deadlines.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with UC Davis safety policies and procedures.

Department OverviewThe Physics Department falls within the College of Letters and Sciences, Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and has a mission of teaching, research, and service. Physics employs approximately 300 people, including 51 Academic Senate faculty, 22 staff, ~40 researchers/postdoctoral scholars, and ~155 graduate students. Enrollments in PHY and AST undergraduate courses exceeds 11,000 per year. The department is housed in three campus buildings and participates actively in research at various laboratories nationwide and abroad.
