Under the direction of the Cytology Supervisor, the Cytotechnologist examines and evaluates cell samples for the presence or absence of normal/abnormal cellular patterns, inflammatory reactions, presence of microorganisms, and pre-malignant and malignant changes. Processes and prepares all specimens, such as bronchial washing/brushing, urine, body fluids, cerebrospinal fluids, fine needle aspiration, etc., for cytodiagnostic procedures. The Cytotech records cytology/histology correlations, determines specimens and tissues to be correlated, searches files and records, and assembles and prepares complete documentation for physician review. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

• Oversees the work of support staff to ensure proper procedures and techniques are followed. Assists in the training of new staff, students, and co-workers, as needed or required 20%
• Ensures lab instruments are functioning properly and handles repairs as needed. Performs laboratory inventory control, data entry, and other clerical duties as assigned. 10%
• Assists physician in fine needle aspirations by accurately determining adequacy of specimen and preparing slide to help physician determine diagnosis and subsequent treatment 20%
• Appropriately investigates specific procedural modifications and unexpected test results to determine reason for non-conformance to established patterns. Assists with the development and evaluation of procedures. Ensures compliance with all protocols, policies, procedures and regulatory agencies‘ requirements, and accurately maintains required records of laboratory tests conducted, preparing reports as required 20%
• Appropriately determines the adequacy/acceptability of cell samples and accurately verifies specimen identity. Correctly examines specimens, identifies microorganisms, interprets morphologic changes, and correlates results with patient history, diagnosis and clinical condition to assist in appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Uses appropriate techniques to handle, process and test specimens according to appropriate protocols 30%

Required Qualifications:

• Strong recommendation from training or previous employment
• Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
• Must pass the slide review exam set by the department
• Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
• Must be willing to work variable shifts and overtime as required
• Must be willing to testify in court regarding testing activities if subpoenaed
• Must be ASCP registered and have a current California license
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience in a hospital setting
• Cytology training in a hospital setting
