Responsibilities:

Incumbent works as a specialist or lead within the clinic. Demonstrates the highest degree of proficiency in use of all equipment and performance of technical ophthalmic procedures. Performs preliminary examinations, including recording patient history, testing visual acuity, intra-ocular pressure, neutralizing current lenses with the lensometer, automated and simple manifest refractions, and screening color tests. Performs special tests based on physicians' orders including keratometer readings, visual fields, GDX, topography, and axial length measurements. Triages patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills, intervening with physicians as appropriate. In conjunction with the Manager, coordinates front and back office operations and scheduling to maximize patient and office flow and assists in assessing training needs of staff. As appropriate, formulates patient plans of care and follow up. Works independently within the parameters of COT certification. Assists in the orientation of new technicians and assists the new hire with learning all job skills with diagnostic testing.

This position may be filled as an HLT II, HLT III or HLT IV and the classification is dependent upon certification held. The HLT II position requires previous experience in Ophthalmology; the HLT III requires previous experience and holds a current COA certification; the HLT IV also requires previous experience and holds a current COT certification.

Essential Job Functions:

  • OA: Administers medications, patient treatments or procedures in a safe, effective and age appropriate manner, and in compliance with all policies and regulations. Prepares instruments, equipment and supplies in an organized and timely manner and creates and maintains the sterile field. Assist the physician by performing preliminary examinations. Records patient history, determines visual acuity, neutralizes lenses with lensometer. 25%
  • OA: Accurately follows department procedures, ensuring equipment is in working condition, and turns off equipment as appropriate. Demonstrates safe use and care of instruments and equipment. Consistently performs quality control checks on all equipment as appropriate and follows the departmental instrument decontamination policy. Maintains appropriate documentation, inventory and record keeping of supplies and equipment. Captures supply charges on encounter forms used for procedures. 20%
  • OA: Accurately follows department guidelines in preparing patients for clinic visits, evaluates and documents the patient/family response to care. Documents patient observations/care appropriately in the computer, on the flow sheets, or wherever appropriate. Provides educational materials to patients in a timely manner. Assists with patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills. 20%
  • COA: Accurately measures intra-ocular pressure, auto and manifest refractions, and screening color tests. Performs special testing upon physician orders to include Keratometer measurements, visual fields, nerve fiber analyzer, color testing, Schirmers tear test, topography and amsler grids. Assists with minor surgeries, intra-ocular injections. Retrieves lab and radiology reports from computer. Orders films if indicated. Effectively orients and trains new staff in the use of common instruments and equipment. 20%
  • Actively engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out relationships with the patient and co-workers 15%

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
  • Previous experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Current COT Certification
  • Current BLS certification required by time of hire
  • Capable of performing all but the most specialized tests and patient work ups in order for medical staff to diagnose problem
  • Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Title 22 and JCAHO standards
  • Surgical Technician certification
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or Vietnamese
  • Ability to instruct others in the use of equipment and performance of procedures
