Incumbent will provide both oral interpretation and written translation effective in English and a secondary language. Employs the appropriate mode of interpreting (e.g., consecutive, simultaneous, or summary) to patients and their families. Serving the Limited English Proficient (LEP) patient, will understand and follow the ethical principles of confidentiality, impartiality, respect, professionalism and integrity, accuracy and completeness and cultural responsiveness.

Essential Job Functions:

• Ensures accurate handoffs at every shift change; accurately collects and enters relevant data into spreadsheets; appropriately uses the queuing system to track information; and maintains accurate documentation outside of the queuing system of additional services performed. 20%
• Effectively assists with training new interpreter staff and volunteers. Trains staff and physicians to access all language services. 10%
• Communicates clearly and professionally, complying with the departments Service Level Agreement at all times. Consistently uses defined protocols for delivering language services, and ensures translated materials are provided within a specified time period. 20%
• Actively seeks opportunities to bring language services to the Limited English Proficient. Accurately provides interpretation to the Limited English Proficient patients and visitors. Accurately translates documents into specified language, paying close attention to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation. 50%

Required Qualifications:

• Skill to communicate effectively with persons from various educational and socio-cultural backgrounds
• Passing grade on the competency test that demonstrates ability to fluently speak, read and write in English and Spanish
• National certification as Medical Interpreter, or certification of completion of Medical Interpreter training course from an independent Medical Interpreter school
• Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
• Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
• Minimum 4 years experience working as a Medical Interpreter in a healthcare setting
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Excellent grammatical, proofreading and editing skills in both English and Spanish
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Ability to provide simultaneous interpretation
• Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
• Ability to effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
• Demonstrated ability to fluently communicate in a language other than Spanish / English (i.e., American Sign Language, Korean Language)
• Bachelor Degree in related field or equivalent education and experience
