DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The California Digital Library (CDL) supports the education, research, and public service mission of the University of California in partnership with the ten Campus University of California Libraries system. CDL has four core programs: Collection Development; Discovery & Delivery; Publishing, Archives, and Digitization; and the UC Curation Center. As a globally-connected digital library, CDL occupies a unique position between the local UC campuses and the global digital library infrastructure. The primary user base for CDL services and programs includes UC faculty, students, and library staff. The CDL is a unit within the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 70 and is located in downtown Oakland. This position may be eligible for remote work. This position is not available for sponsorship.
POSITION SUMMARY
The California Digital Library (CDL) is looking for a User Experience (UX) Content Specialist to provide user-centered content and design services for websites and applications that we manage and maintain. Our ideal candidate has a strong user experience foundation with the ability to adapt product goals to meet end-user needs.
As a member of the CDL UX Team and reporting to the UX Manager, this position will work to support CDL program and service managers in the development, improvement, and maintenance of complex systemwide services, websites, and digital properties. The primary user base for CDL services and programs include UC faculty, students and UC Libraries staff.
The UX Content Specialist will be an experienced professional who will apply content management, UX design and assessment concepts to a range of complex user-centered tasks. They will regularly work on multiple projects where the analysis of situations or data require an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The ultimate goal in all of their work is to bring resolution to critical issues and to improve usability to CDL services. The UX Content Specialist will also cooperatively maintain and develop the content management for the primary CDL organizational website, as well as other organizational and service websites and other emerging digital channels as needed.
The UX Content Specialist brings experience as a content manager and user experience professional, stays abreast of emerging and state-of-the-art technologies and technical requirements, such as web accessibility, and will take action to ensure compliance.
The successful candidate is hands on, detail-oriented with an ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and precision; they possess excellent judgment and problem-solving abilities, and actively participate in a highly collaborative, team environment.
The CDL is a unit within the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 75 and is located in downtown Oakland.

Content Management: Manage the updating and governance of the main CDL organizational website and other CDL managed websites and emerging digital channels as needed. Instruct and assist content contributors on the use of the various website content management systems. Create and update documentation, knowledge base, and training materials for content authors. Comfortable creating, selecting, or editing image assets as needed. Knowledgeable about what makes well-structured and accessible content for the web. Pull analytics data and create reports as needed. Help to assess, audit, analyze and migrate content as needed. Create content data models as needed. Regularly evaluate existing content and edit for suitability and accuracy. Develop metrics to measure content effectiveness. Provide clear, accessible and web-friendly content and labeling as needed for CDL websites and various other user touch points, such as social media, emails, or marketing collateral. Identify user content needs, develop strategy, and execute on content needs through stakeholder interviews, user research, content audits, and other methods.

UX Design: Generate and/or analyze functional specification documents using various user data inputs from direct end-users (faculty, students, UC library staff), project stakeholders (CDL service managers, UC library staff), and other data sources, e.g., Google Analytics. Generate the full range of UX design documents, including workflow mockups, interactive wireframes, and creative briefs that take into account responsive and inclusive design and accessibility best practices. Create and communicate functional designs of complex user interfaces to stakeholders, service managers, web producers, and developers. As a CDL UX team member, participate in user experience design discussions, standards and process development.

UX Assessment, Research, and Testing: In partnership with CDL UX team members, collaborate on the planning, design, execution, and analysis of user-centered assessment, research, and testing activities on behalf of CDL program and service managers. Utilize different assessment methods, such as survey creation, interviews, and design exercises, to gather and identify user needs for both website interaction and digital content. Employ different usability and evaluation testing techniques to test efficacy and effectiveness of website and content design.

Project Management: Independently manage project assignments related to UX activities, following established CDL best practices for project planning.
Required Qualifications
  • Three (3) years or more of related design and digital content experience.
  • Skills in diagramming, prototyping and using design tools.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated strength in organizational and time-management skills; proven ability to effectively organize, prioritize and manage a number of assignments to complete tasks in a timely manner. Agility to adapt to frequent shifts in priorities. Able to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in a variety of writing styles, including web writing, copywriting, and/or persuasive writing
  • Demonstrated experience implementing user interface design best practices and guidelines in websites and / or production software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design principles and guidelines for area of expertise (i.e., visual design, interaction design, information / data visualization, user interface software).
  • Demonstrated experience assessing and evaluating content, generating content inventories, and managing and providing hands on web content migration as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience working with CMSs (Drupal, Wordpress, or similar) and basic ability to perform maintenance of digital products. Ability and willingness to learn use of new technical tools as needed.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web content strategy and best practices for maintaining compelling content over time.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated technical skills in computer applications for web production, image or video handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Understanding or knowledge of academic research processes and procedures.
  • Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience or training preferred.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area, e.g., Design, Human Computer Interaction, Library Science, Information Science, Communications, or Visual Design, and / or equivalent experience / training.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary: The recommended salary range is $105,000 - $110,000. Commensurate with experience.

CDL offices are located in downtown Oakland, CA. Applicants who wish to work remotely from within California, or on a hybrid schedule, will be considered. This position is not eligible for Visa transfer or sponsorship
