Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide an expert level consultation to the pharmacy, medical and nursing staff in the one to three of the clinical specialty areas, depending on training and experience: Cardiology, Primary Care, Dermatology, Gastrointestinal, Rheumatology, or Pain Management. The Pharmacist will perform the following functions:

  • Collaborates with service providers and other professionals to run disease medication management programs
  • Develops intervention strategies to optimize medication utilization, including but not limited to disease specific guidelines, clinical pathways, restricted use criteria, and policy development.
  • Provides collaborative pharmaceutical care with staff pharmacists to patients receiving medication therapy.
  • Establishes a means to report and monitor ongoing medication management utilization with the Practice/Services.
  • Provides appropriate documentation of all activities
  • Precepts residents and students in a rotation.
  • Serves as the pharmacy department liaison with the Practice/Service in the Outpatient Setting Only.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform competencies as outlined in Pharmacy Competency Assessment tools.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965. Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

Required Qualifications

  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Experience in a hospital setting, may include one year residency in hospital or clinical pharmacy practice and/or one year supervisory, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Maintain exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with patients, pharmacists and other healthcare personnel and administrators.
  • Flexible; able to cope with rapid change; comfortable with an ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain effective organizational, management and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate programs in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to effectively participate in and develop a team.
  • Demonstrated clinical pharmacy skills and knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PharmD degree.
  • Completion of an ASHP- accredited residency and/or fellowship.

License/Certification

  • Current pharmacist license to practice pharmacy in the State of California or obtained within 6 months of hire. Must be in good standing with the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS).
