Job Summary

The Cyster lab has an exciting opportunity for an SRA 2 or 3 to join the research team. The lab wants to understand how cell migration during immune responses is guided and controlled to support antigen encounter and cell-cell interaction events needed for immunity to pathogens and tumors. This knowledge can help improve human health through providing insights for making improved vaccines, anti-tumor therapies and mechanisms to block autoimmunity. The overall purpose of this position is to be an integral part of the Cyster lab research team working with other lab members on a range of immunobiology studies as the 'point person' for mouse breeding and genotyping. Additionally, there are opportuinities to help the principal investigator with lab management tasks. Position will require a degree of independence and will be under general supervision. The individual will be a valued member of the lab and actively participate in group meetings and immunology program activities, and contribute to publications.
Major roles:

  1. Helping with maintaining a large mouse colony through breeding and genotyping work.
  2. Collaborate other lab members on research projects that focus on mouse breeding, genotyping and immunizing, cell transfers, tumor implanting, tissue collection, and flow cytometry.
  3. Helping with core lab management tasks including regulatory compliance and training of junior lab members in mouse-related tasks.
This job is a balancing act and requires an organized person with talent for multi-tasking. Effective communication skills are necessary to ensure efficient communication with multiple lab members from different backgrounds. Focus and attention to detail is important for performing accurate and efficient weaning and genotyping. The job is performed under general direction where goals and objectives are broadly outlined.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $30.89 - $49.68 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Mission Bay and Parnassus Heights. It is also the home department for the multidisciplinary UCSF Immunology Program and Microbial Pathogenesis Program. The fields of Microbiology and Immunology encompass many aspects of human health and a goal of our research is to further the basic understanding of microbes and the immune system, as well as translate this knowledge into improvement of human health. Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to Postdoctoral Fellows. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degree are enrolled in the Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) or the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Programs, depending on their research emphasis.

Required Qualifications

SRA II

  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
SRA III
  • BA/BS with a degree in a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience in Mouse breeding and colony management
  • Experience in Mouse genotyping by PCR
  • Experience in Mouse anesthesia and blood collection
  • Experience in Basic molecular biology including gene cloning and sequencing
  • Experience in Reporting
  • Experience in Organizational skills
  • Experience in Communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in RNA extraction from cells or tissues
  • Experience in RT-qPCR
  • Experience in Flow cytometry
  • Experience with tissue culture (sterile technique) and basic microscopy
  • Experience with lab management tasks such as maintaining regulatory compliance (chemical, biosafety)
  • Experience with ordering and maintaining supplies
  • Experience with organizing maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Experience with ensuring lab members follow animal care procedures
  • Experience in helping principle investigator with lab management tasks
