Job SummaryThe Roman Family Center for Decision Research (RFCDR) is devoted to the study of how individuals form judgments and make decisions. Researchers at the RFCDR examine the processes by which intuition, reasoning, and social interaction produce beliefs, judgments, and choices. The Lab Research Professional supports faculty members, research professionals, and PhD candidates with their research projects and provides managerial and administrative support within the RFCDR Labs’ research operations. This is a two year position (with the possibility of a third year if mutually desired), with the ideal candidate being one who is interested in gaining a few years of post-baccalaureate research and professional experience before pursuing graduate study in the behavioral sciences.
Responsibilities
  • Serves as research project manager for studies that are conducted in the RFCDR Labs by affiliated faculty and graduate students, managing the full life-cycle of each research study from research request submission through final delivery of collected data, across RFCDR Lab sites (Mindworks, Campus Lab, Virtual Lab, and Pop-up Lab locations).
  • Conducts recruitment, consent, management of study sessions, and debriefing of participants in research conducted in the RFCDR Labs. Demonstrates expertise in providing information to Lab visitors/participants about the field of behavioral science and serves as a positive ambassador for the RFCDR, assisting with recruitment initiatives as needed.
  • Provides consult and feedback for faculty and graduate student researchers to help optimize and troubleshoot research study materials to be conducted in the RFCDR Labs, communicating research study management updates with faculty members and their research teams in a timely manner.
  • Assists in interviewing, hiring, training, approving hours, and managing RFCDR Labs research assistants, providing ongoing oversight of research assistant interaction with Lab visitors and data collection with study participants, and providing oversight of research assistant professional development activities, including the annual research assistant research project.
  • Maintains current training in research ethics, including the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program), and assists in training and overseeing the RFCDR Labs research assistants as they engage with participants.
  • Manages and analyzes datasets, entering, coding, and providing descriptive and statistical analysis of data as needed, for faculty members’ research studies conducted in the RFCDR Labs, as well as for operational and accounting records maintained for the Labs.
  • Provides support in optimizing research operations in the RFCDR Labs, by maintaining and reviewing operational records for the Labs and supporting ongoing operational initiatives, and conducting and presenting data analysis as needed from these records (e.g., for quarterly meetings).
  • Assists with procurement and management of inventory. Maintains and tracks all materials, equipment, logs, and any other items required to conduct faculty research projects carried out in the CDR Labs. Assists with procurement of study-related supplies and materials, and manages expenses using UChicago ePayment and GEMS online systems.
  • Actively participates and collaborates within one faculty lab group (lab group placement to be determined by mutual agreement), and attends their weekly lab group meetings to help support faculty research as well as to advance our research lab operations and outreach.
  • Attends and assists in managing RFCDR Center and Labs team meetings. Assists the RFCDR Administrative Office on projects and events as needed.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Education:Minimum QualificationsMinimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Work Experience:Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Certifications:Preferred QualificationsEducation:
  • Bachelor’s degree in the areas of psychology, organizational behavior, marketing, other behavioral science discipline.
  • Master’s degree.
Experience:
  • A minimum one year of experience in conducting in-person and/or online experimental research.
Technical Skills Or Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • Demonstrated familiarity with social science research methods.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills, as well as organizational skills.
  • Work independently with little supervision; possess a self-motivated disposition; identify opportunities for improvement and recommend effective changes, all while achieving key objectives resulting in desired outcomes.
  • Excellent strategic planning, critical thinking, attention to detail, analytical, and persuasion skills.
  • Handle multiple detailed tasks/projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and diplomatically with colleagues, as well as with students, faculty and corporate contacts in a multitude of communication methods i.e., in person, email, phone.
  • Professional demeanor, including tact, discretion, and a customer service-oriented approach.
