Job SummaryCareers in Law (CIL) is a non-selective program open to all students and alumni of the College who are interested in careers in law. Through workshops, presentations, internships and one-on-one advising, CIL seeks to support students as they decide whether a career in law is a good fit for them. UChicago Careers in Law also helps students prepare strong, successful applications to law school.
Reporting to the Deputy Director of Pre-Professional Programs, the Program Director, Careers in Law (CIL) will create and manage a comprehensive set of law programming, advising, and support for students and alumni of the University of Chicago. This will include, but is not limited to, providing advice on law school applications and the application process, and offering opportunities for students to explore careers in law through internship, externships, mentoring programs and more. The Program Director will provide strategic direction for the program and will work collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve these goals.
Responsibilities
  • Coaches undergraduate students interested in law school and legal careers on appropriate career management and job search skills in large lectures, hands-on workshops, special events, training programs, and one-on-one career coaching settings to help them be competitive applicants.
  • Helps students to find suitable jobs and internships and reports on placement and law school admissions outcomes to senior leadership. May also work in employer relations to build relationships in the legal profession and secure additional internships and full-time opportunities for University students. Also works with existing alumni and recruiting partners.
  • Provides guidance and support to undergraduate students and alumni through the law school application process, monitoring the success of each class of applicants.
  • Analyzes markets and trends as they relate to job searches. Solicits and analyzes student feedback and evaluations and helps strategize with other career services staff members, student organizations, or other staff to determine program offerings and innovations.
  • Conceptualizes, develops, and delivers career management programming. May partner with several industry, regional, or functional student groups to assist in planning and delivering career-management related programming.
  • Manages or leads various special projects/programs that provide career related support. Meets with recruiters on an occasional basis to discuss recruiting strategies and hiring needs.
  • Oversees and manages Rising Attorneys Program cohort. Supports the management of the Law & Politics cohort.
  • Participates in career management team leadership. Provides professional mentoring and program guidance to junior staff.
  • Conducts job search and career management related large lectures, hands-on workshops, special events, training programs, and one-on-one career coaching sessions. Acts as a resource for and directs students to other career resources as needed.
  • Works, with minimal guidance, to write timely and effective articles about career management topics for a variety of student publications. Conceptualizes, develops, and delivers career management programming and published materials.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Education:Minimum QualificationsMinimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Work Experience:Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Certifications:Preferred QualificationsEducation:
  • JD or a comparable advanced degree.
Experience:
  • Career counseling or three years’ experience in industry specialty.
  • Developing and implementing a successful communication strategy for marketing programs, recruiting volunteers, and/or liaising with student groups.
  • Background in the legal profession.
Technical Skills Or Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Utilize Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or other digital platform for meetings and events.
  • Expertise in counseling, program development, or a related area.
  • Knowledge of career development theory and strong coaching or counseling skills.

  • Experience developing and delivering presentations, and communicate to large groups as well as one-on-one with students, senior management, faculty, and alumni.
  • Develop strong relationships with a wide variety of constituents, including employers and external partners like alumni and parents, students, faculty, staff, and senior leadership.
  • Outcomes-driven and action-oriented attitude, ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Problem solving and reasoning, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Handle sensitive matters with tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Working Conditions
  • Work evening hours and weekends on an occasional basis, generally 1-2 days per month.
  • Travel one to two times per year.
