Summary Job Summary Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) encourages applications for a Temporary Compliance Specialist II! This position manages and updates the chemical inventory; implements changes vital to achieve a central chemical procurement process; performs laboratory safety inspections and contamination surveys; assists EH&S staff, researchers, and building managers with lab cleanouts; performs waste pickups and processes wastes generated in research settings; performs safety equipment surveys and tests; builds and posts compliance signage in campus laboratories and common areas; enters and analyzes information in EH&S databases; and assists with other duties as assigned.

Who We AreEnvironmental Health & Safety (EH&S) provides comprehensive safety oversight, training, compliance assurance and hazardous material management/disposal services to all campus operations (research, general fund operations, auxiliary operations, events, etc.). We coordinate with University Risk Management regarding campus safety liabilities/risks and develop programs to proactively address issues; develop and implement occupational safety programs that work to reduce risk management liabilities and claims, and coordinate responses to critical campus incidents and ensure appropriate hazard mitigation and remediation for hazardous materials incidents in full compliance with applicable state, federal, and/or local regulations.
Responsibilities What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Chemical inventory: train researchers to update their chemical inventory; update/perform chemical inventories as needed; provide chemical inventory supplies to researchers and building proctors/managers as needed (i.e., barcode stickers, scanners); assist researchers with questions as they arise; assist with creation of a central chemical procurement process. Emergency Equipment Surveys and Inspections: perform emergency eyewash and shower tests for proper functionality; perform fume Hood flow tests using Velocicalc flow meter; record test results into the EH&S compliance database; report noncompliant or malfunctioning units to the appropriate research staff, and building proctor or manager.
  • Laboratory Safety Inspections and Assistance: Perform laboratory safety inspections to ensure compliance with university requirements, as assigned; provide technical support for laboratories related to interpretation and implementation of various research safety requirements; perform contamination surveys of laboratory areas, as assigned; suggest and/or implement new procedures or protocols related to the inspection program that demonstrate increased safety, compliance, or efficiencies.
  • Hazardous Materials Receipt and Transfer: Ensure safe receipt and delivery of radioactive and other hazardous materials to Boulder and/or Colorado Springs campus laboratories in compliance with state and federal regulations and CU licensing requirements; maintain accurate records for inventory reconciliation; assist with the proper shipment of hazardous materials to off-campus locations in accordance with all applicable regulatory and institutional requirements including preparation of shipping containers and paperwork.
  • Waste Pickups and Processing (includes laboratory cleanouts): Pickup, transport, and process radioactive, hazardous, and/or biological waste generated at CU in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as CU policies and procedures; evaluate waste streams for waste type and waste characteristics to determine the appropriate classification of waste streams; based on waste classification, ensure proper storage and/or processing requirements; perform waste consolidation and packaging in accordance with established policies and procedures for the waste stream(s); prepare paperwork for off-site shipping of wastes; enter and update information into EH&S compliance databases.
  • Compliance signs & posters: build, print, and hang laboratory safety and emergency response signage for laboratories and common areas; update information in the EH&S compliance database; hang other signs and stickers as needed (i.e., chemical sink disposal, emergency shower/eyewash, fume hood sash height).
  • Other duties: update and maintain databases; supply deliveries and other projects; Answer phone and some clerical duties.
What You Should Know
  • In this role, you will need to be able to:
  • Pass a motor vehicle background check be able to acquire and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License with a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 12 months of employment.
  • Satisfactorily complete a pre-placement physical and a medical evaluation for the operation of a commercial motor vehicle.
  • Be medically certified to wear respirators (SCBAs and air-purifying).
  • Able to respond to emergency situations within one hour, including non-working hours, weekends and holiday when on-call for emergency response.
  • This is a temporary, full-time position. The work will be performed in-person.
What We Can Offer$26.50/hour.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) from an accredited institution. Work experience demonstrating competencies equivalent to the competencies learned through completion of the required education may substitute for the education.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and maneuver up to 600 pound drums on occasion using a drum dolly.
What You Will Need
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with team members.
  • Have a solid understanding of Macintosh or Windows computer, word processing and database applications (Microsoft Excel).
  • Able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public and university staff and researchers, to work around various hazardous materials and equipment found in campus labs and the EH&S center; to understand highway traffic signs and signals, and to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • One or more years of experience managing hazardous materials.
  • Familiarity with campus and lab locations.
