The Institute for Sustainability and Resilience (ISR) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) provides campus-wide leadership and coordination for interdisciplinary education, research and outreach related to climate change, environmental sustainability and community resilience in Hawai‘i and abroad. The ISR identifies and coordinates sustainability and resilience-focused curriculum across the campus for the purpose of offering students interdisciplinary, actions and solutions-oriented curricular programming that prepares them to be problem solvers for contemporary environmental and socio-ecological challenges. Currently the ISR stewards a BA program (granted via Interdisciplinary Studies), as well as an undergraduate certificate program in sustainability. Future programs could include additional undergraduate level sustainability-focused curricular pathways and collaborative graduate level degree programs. The ISR maintains an active applied research program in areas of sustainability and resilience, with an emphasis on responses to the climate crisis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
ISR seeks a tenure track Assistant Professor (F3) with a strong background and interest in sustainability education, research and program development/support. The faculty will help to manage and grow UHM’s BA and certificate programs by advising and mentoring students, teaching one sustainability-focused course per semester (e.g. SUST 495 Capstone, as appropriate), and developing and fostering opportunities for students interested in sustainability to gain hands-on and applied learning experiences (as part of the BA capstone and other). The faculty will be an integral part of the ISR team to expand sustainability and resilience course offerings across the UHM campus. This includes facilitating the interdisciplinary faculty review of sustainability-focused (i.e. SUST designated) courses, as well as working with interested faculty to incorporate sustainability principles into their course offerings. The faculty will also help to further develop and steward sustainability and resilience curricular programs across UHM, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, through developing collaborations with relevant units and instructors. The faculty will assist with ISR program communications/outreach including website management and events, such as the ISR film and seminar series, with the aim of engaging with stakeholders both internal and external to UHM. Lastly, the faculty will participate in ISR’s research program through grant writing and management, contributing to peer-reviewed publications and reports, and giving public presentations. Other duties as assigned by the ISR Director.
