Duties and Responsibilities:
 
1. Position to serve as Director of the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence, Department of Native Hawaiian Health.
 
2. Oversee (plan, direct, and evaluate) the operations of the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence (NHCOE) program aimed at recruiting and retaining Native Hawaiian students in medicine and other health professions, faculty and student development, research and information dissemination, cultural competency training, and community engagement and partnerships.
 
3. Teach and design programs that educate undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and medical students about social-cultural factors impacting health, health disparities, and workforce diversity.
 
4. Conduct and lead research projects that focus on student engagement and recruitment into the health professions, workforce diversity, cultural competency, medical professionalism, and/or health disparities.
 
5. Maintain continuous quality improvement of program activities and prepares technical reports and proposals for extramural funding.
 
6. Manage the day-to-day operations of the programs to include, supervision of program faculty and staff, strategic planning, fiscal administration, and budgetary management.
 
7. Engage in service activities and advocacy for building strong collaborations within the University of Hawaii System, the Department of Native Hawaiian Health, the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and among local, regional, and national partners to accomplish the mission and goals of the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence.
 
8. Serve as a role model and leader on issues of healthcare workforce diversity, social determinants of health, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Health.
 
Perform related duties as assigned.
 
 
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications:
 
1. PhD degree or equivalent degree from a university or school of recognized standing.
 
2. Demonstrated experience in program administration, grants management and administration, supervisory/managerial responsibilities, and implementation and evaluation of grant projects, educational curricula, and community engagement initiatives with a focus on workforce diversity and/or Native Hawaiian Health.
 
3. Participated in formal relationships having served as a mentor for students and junior faculty.
 
4. Demonstrated experience in working with programs serving Native Hawaiian, underrepresented, or disadvantaged students with demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty and community groups; demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive matter with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; excellent oral and written communication skills.
 
5. Evidence of effective teaching and developing academic curricula at the post- baccalaureate and medical school level.
 
6. Experience in post-baccalaureate and/or medical education research.
 
7. Evidence of excellent team building and interpersonal and communication skills.
 
 
Desired Qualifications
 
1. Experience in working with and knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture and the Native Hawaiian community and its health-related issues.
 
2. Knowledge and understanding of health care systems of Hawai?i and experience working with a diverse multicultural physician workforce.
 
3. An understanding of the principles and practice of problem-based learning and faculty development in medical education.
