Graduate Assistant (GA) Position for Nurturing Belonging
Nurturing Belonging is a two-year pilot project of the JABSOM Dean’s Office that seeks to promote health equity in clinical practice and medical education by supporting faculty development in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion and contributing to the larger institutional goals of making JABSOM and the University of Hawai’i into Native Hawaiian Places of Learning. By collaborating with experts from the Humanities, Social Work, Public Health, and other disciplines, this initiative seeks to celebrate diversity, educate faculty about health equity by using medical humanities, and foster an inclusive community of practice where all feel they belong. The project leads are seeking one GA from the College of Arts, Languages & Letters to assist with this work.

Other Conditions: To begin approximately August 2024. Renewal dependent on performance, departmental needs and/or funding availability. Inquiring candidates must be enrolled as graduate students at the University of Hawaii Manoa campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  • Serve as a Program Coordinator responsible for meeting logistics, tracking action items / deadlines, note taking, and communication with the network of individuals working on this project
  • Create outlines and agendas for advisory board meetings; take minutes at meetings and distribute them via email
  • Help advisory board and steering committee to find art / literature / music / stories that are relevant to our community and goals
  • Assist in developing program materials, which may include a combination of video, annotated video & slides, workbooks, and other formats
  • Create social media posts, write articles and content for the JABSOM / UH Manoa intranet
  • Assist Nurturing Belonging Leadership in drafting and researching (literature reviews) presentations and manuscripts for publication
  • Document GA position duties in order to support sustainability of this project
  • Other support related duties that may arise as the project gets underway
Learning opportunities for GAs
• Be part of a team interested in deep interdisciplinary scholarship and innovative didactic
methods with a strong focus on creating community and belonging
• Share expertise and learn from colleagues with whom they would not otherwise be exposed
• Practice developing curricula and exploring creative options for curriculum design
• Explore possibilities for interdisciplinary careers that they may not have yet imagined
• Consider the intersections of health and humanities to discover a different dimension of their
graduate coursework
Minimum Qualifications:
 • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field in the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences
 • Classified, full-time graduate student in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters
 • Good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
 • Excellent people skills, including the ability to speak in front of groups
 • Eager to learn about and contribute to the promotion of health equity
 • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Canva, and Powerpoint
 • Fluent in written and spoken English
 • Proactive and self-directed team member who will seek opportunities to contribute to the
success of this project
 • Must have strong organizational skills
 • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with others
