Duties and Responsibilities:
Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies (Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge) is seeking a graduate assistant to research water issues related to the work of the State of Hawaii Commission on Water Resource Management (Water Commission) . Two key areas require further research and technical support 1) Native Hawaiian Traditional and Customary Rights, and 2) Appurtenant Right claims. Other areas of research include water resource planning, water management designation, and other pertinent areas related to wai.

Under the general supervision of Professor Beamer at Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, the position will work in conjunction with Water Commission staff to develop a work plan that may involve:

  1. Assisting the Commission in updating its Hawaii Water Plan Framework;
  2. Conducting wai (water), aina-based, and Circular Economy research and community targeted aloha aina projects in Hawaii and abroad
  3. Conducting literature reviews;
  4. Developing presentations and lectures,
  5. Conducting archival land, water, and resource sustainability, research and Hawaiian language source materials;
  6. Collecting and analyzing data;
  7. Facilitating meetings;
  8. Attending workshops and lectures;
  9. Writing articles;
  10. Assisting with driving duties; and,
  11. Traveling to remote areas to hike, camp, and spend nights in rural settings;
  12. Attending weekly staff meetings;
  13. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Admitted full-time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in a graduate degree program (MA or PhD) at the time of hire with good standing.
  2. A bachelor's degree in Hawaiian Studies, Geography, Botany, Anthropology, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Business, Agriculture or Sustainability related field;
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of Aloha aina issues, Sustainability concepts, and Climate Change
  4. Ability to conduct independent research, literature reviews, analyze and synthesize information;
  5. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. This requirement may be fulfilled by possession of a valid State of Hawaii Driver's License (Class 3), valid comparable driver's license, or use of other means of transportation which meets the position's needs.
  6. Must meet Graduate Assistant eligibility requirements of the UH Manoa Office of Graduate Division.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Experience with GIS or Google Earth or other mapping software;
  2. Experience in Hawaiian archival land research;
  3. Ability to read and write in the Hawaiian Language;
  4. Experience in community-based aloha aina activities;
  5. Excellent writing, analytical, and oral communication skills;
  6. Knowledge of Hawaiian history, communities, and values;
  7. Demonstrated ability to work well with teams and across multiple projects.
