Position renewable dependent upon availability of funds, program needs, and satisfactory performance
Position to begin mid-to-late August or as soon, thereafter, as possible
 
Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under the immediate supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and senior staff, in partnership between the Hawai'i Department of Health’s (DOH) Alcohol and Drug Use Division (ADAD) and Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, assist with providing research support on projects addressing alcohol and substance use within the state in order to disseminate state data in a user-friendly format
  2. Search and summarize the epidemiologic research literature on public health topics including those associated with alcohol and substance use
  3. Under guidance of the PI and other senior program staff, perform quantitative and qualitative data analyses related to various population-level health indicators in relation to alcohol and substance use
  4. Familiarity with secondary data analyses
  5. Support abstract and report writing
  6. Assist in developing presentation and webinar materials
  7. Assist in coordinating and organizing webinars with key stakeholders
  8. Present results graphically and in text to local stakeholder and funders for use in reports, conference presentations, and publications
  9. Design and create new content for infographics, websites, and social media, as needed
  10. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Classified degree-seeking student in a Masters or PhD program in Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or related field under UH Graduate Division
  2. Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  3. Maintain no less than 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis)
  4. Experience with data presentation and data visualization
  5. Experiencing using design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Piktochart, or related software to create visuals for infographics, websites, or reports.
  6. Strong oral and written communication skills
  7. Must be responsible, dependable, and efficient
  8. Attention to detail for meeting milestones and deliverables in a timely manner
  9. Competency with Office, Google features, Zoom functions
  10. Proficient with statistical software e.g., R, SPSS, SAS, Stata or Tableau
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Classified University of Hawai'i Public Health student
  2. A doctoral student at the University of Hawai'i
  3. Familiarity with substance use research, intervention and treatment research in substance use, or prevention research through previous coursework and/or work experience
  4. Knowledge of epidemiology or statistics as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  5. Experience with secondary data analyses 
  6. Strong command of research methodology. 
  7. Experience with applied research, working in the community, or volunteering
  8. Experience preparing research reports and/or scientific publications, data presentations and data visualizations
  9. Previous experience with state or federally funded project
  10. Knowledge of public health, epidemiology, or statistics as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  11. Familiarity with alcohol and substance use research
  12. Experience with secondary data analyses
  13. Experience working with vital statistics and/or survey data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS), the Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring Survey (PRAMS),or other similar surveys
  14. Experience facilitating a virtual webinar
  15. Involvement with the manuscript writing process
