UICOMP is one of the regional campuses of the University of Illinois College of Medicine and is part of a 900-part bed hospital enterprise containing two major teaching hospital systems as well as the medical school. UICOMP’s educational programs include 260 medical students and over 300 residents/fellows overseen by its diverse and engaged faculty. The Associate Chair of Research is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the department’s research initiatives as well as providing knowledge and training to researchers, faculty, and learners to stimulate research development, projects and related publications. The candidate is expected to evaluate research space and develop strategies and priorities related to allocation of space and resources needed for growth and development. The position’s major responsibility is to build and strengthen interdisciplinary research efforts to enhance excellence in creating a culture of innovation, scholarship, and scientific advancement. The position will afford the opportunity to mentor and coach faculty and learners of the Department in their research endeavors with opportunities for collaborations and partnerships both within the department and across UICOMP and the local and regional healthcare system. Such collaborations shall include, but not be limited to working with the Center 4Health Research at the College of Medicine Peoria and other Centers across University of Illinois College of Medicine, UIC, and the local healthcare systems. The Department of Medicine seeks an individual who will establish and/or enhance a research program of excellence that aims to transform and sustain the culture of the Unit to one of innovation, scholarship, and discovery; has a track record of scientific discovery and/or scholarship and accomplishment in their field of expertise; is eligible for an academic appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor in accordance with University policies and procedures; and has an established record of excellence in the mentorship of trainees or junior faculty. The Associate Chair of Research will report to the Department of Medicine, UICOMP. Qualified individuals must be an MD or DO with experience in grant writing and management and a proven track record of procuring external funding. The Associate Chair for Research will establish and/or enhance a research program of excellence that aims to transform and sustain the culture of the Department of Medicine to one of innovation, scholarship, and discovery. The Associate Chair for Research shall accomplish this by providing leadership and oversight of the department’s research initiatives. The Associate Chair of Research shall provide knowledge and training to researchers to stimulate research development, projects and related publications. They shall evaluate research space and develop strategies and priorities related to allocation.
The goal is to build and strengthen interdisciplinary research efforts to advance excellence in creating a culture of innovation, scholarship, and discovery. Such collaborations shall include, but not be limited to working with the Center 4Health Research at the College of Medicine Peoria and other Centers across University of Illinois College of Medicine and UIC.
Develop a comprehensive strategic plan to enhance the research and scholarly activities within the Department of Medicine, UICOMP. Provide advice to the Chair on all aspects of scholarly activity or research.
Provide leadership and oversight of departmental research activity, research training and research development.
Establish and oversee a grants management office to assist department faculty in developing grant proposals for intra/extramural grants and IRB/animal protocol applications.
Oversee Research Educational Curriculum: Leadership and vision with respect to modifying/changing the curriculum; consulting with faculty about special topics courses and elective opportunities.
Improve research infrastructure to enhance shared use of core facility, large/expensive equipment, experimental animals, human specimens and samples.
Develop strategic plans for the department to request new lab space and equipment, as needed, based on research achievements, research productivity, research funding, and research training.
Interact with other departments and colleagues in developing interdisciplinary research projects and interdepartmental/intercollegiate research collaborations.
Collaborate with UICOMP Research Services, Academic Affairs and the Academic Programs in Internal Medicine to develop research opportunities for students, residents/fellows, and faculty around the topic of health outcomes.
Perform other related duties, and participate in special projects as assigned.
Represent the Department on relevant committees and at meetings. Serve as acting chair of the department in the chair’s absence.
Qualifications
Must possess a MD or DO degree.
Experience in grant writing and management and a track record of scientific discovery and/or scholarship and accomplishment in their field of expertise, including a track record of external funding.
Has an established record of excellence in the mentorship of trainees or junior faculty.
Is eligible for an academic appointment at the level Associate Professor or Professor in accordance with University policies and procedures.
