Description:
Engage in a wide variety of industrial hygiene tasks such as exposure monitoring, indoor air quality assessments, ergonomic assessments, noise monitoring and exposure monitoring. Manage the chemical fume hood testing program. Conducts training in health and safety topics such as confined spaces, lockout tagout, and fall protection. Conduct safety inspections in industrial environments and other areas on the campus and recommend corrective action where environmental health and safety hazards exist.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Perform other Chemical Fume Hood Testing Program- Manage the chemical fume hood testing program for research laboratories to ensure fume hoods provide users proper protection. Track issues identified to completion. Manage student fume hood testing technicians.
  • Safety Training- Conducts training in health and safety topics such as confined spaces, lockout tagout, and fall protection. Ensure training records are entered in the departmental training database. Routinely check the compliance status of assigned training.
  • Exposure Monitoring- Perform air and noise monitoring and other environmental assessments to quantify employee exposure levels. Conduct industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring of hazardous materials in the hospital and on the University campus to ensure compliance with OSHA's standards for permissible exposure limits of hazardous materials in the workplace and consensus standards for workplace safety established by ACGIH, ASHRAE, and NIOSH. Use equipment such as a MultiRAE, air velocity meter, air sampling badges, pumps, light/sound meter, and cyclone sampling train.
  • Indoor Air Quality and Ergonomic Assessments- Perform indoor air quality assessments to ensure indoor air quality meets established standards, such as those from ASHRAE. Perform ergonomic assessments and make formal recommendations to increase employee comfort and make the workstation more ergonomically sound.
  • Occupational Safety Inspections and Investigations- Perform monthly safety inspections in both of UIC's Utility plants and generate formal inspection reports. Conduct accident and incident investigations. Create formal investigation reports with recommended corrective actions. Track identified issues to completion. Conduct annual lock-out/tag-out audits to ensure employees know how to de-energize a hazardous energy source properly.
  • Mold Evaluations- Conduct mold assessments using visual inspection techniques, moisture meters, and infrared camera technology. Make recommendations when remediation is warranted.
  • Safety phone and Other Duties as Assigned- Carry the "on-call" safety phone and respond to safety questions received on the phone. The responsibility rotates amongst members of the department.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. Bachelor's degree with a major in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Health, Public health, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Industrial Engineering.
  2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in Industrial Hygiene, preferably in an Industrial setting.
  3. Eligibility for licensure/certification as required by State and Federal agencies relative to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, Comprehensive Environmental Response, compensation and Liability Act (CERLA) requirements, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations.
