Job DescriptionThe University of Indianapolis invites applications for the role of Elementary Literacy Practicum Coach and Instructor. This two-year, part-time, 9-month appointment plays a pivotal role in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical classroom experience for our pre-service teachers. The successful candidate will coordinate, supervise, coach, and teach the practicum components of the Elementary Education program, ensuring that future educators are effectively prepared for the multifaceted realities of elementary literacy instruction in today’s schools. Applicants must have an earned master's or doctorate in Education, preferably Literacy, with a strong emphasis in early elementary literacy and the Science of Reading.

Responsibilities-Elementary Literacy Practicum Coach and Instructor
  • Practicum Coordination: In coordination with the Graduate and Undergraduate Directors and the literacy faculty instructors, manage, and coordinate the elementary preservice literacy teaching practicum experiences. This may include identifying suitable placements, building strong relationships with partner schools, and ensuring that practicum experiences align with course objectives.
  • Practicum Supervision: Provide ongoing support and guidance to pre-service teachers during their practicum placements. Responsibilities also include regularly monitoring instruction, providing feedback on lessons, and providing supportive mentorship as they navigate their initial experiences within real-world classroom settings.
  • Instruction: May teach courses related to the practicum experience and prepare students to apply their academic knowledge to practical teaching scenarios. This will involve leading seminars and workshops, and providing one-on-one guidance as required.
  • Assessment and Feedback: Conduct evaluations of pre-service teachers' practicum performance and deliver grades and constructive feedback to aid in their professional growth.
  • Communication: Maintain consistent and effective communication with all stakeholders including preservice teachers, school partners, and university faculty members. Provide regular updates on practicum progress, the latest developments in teacher education, and new projects initiated by the Teacher Education Program.
  • Professional Development: Keep abreast of the latest developments in education and teacher training, especially within the realms of elementary literacy education. Attend professional development seminars, workshops, and conferences, as well as departmental literacy meetings to continuously enhance the practicum component of our program.
  • Administrative Duties: Handle all administrative tasks associated with the practicum component of the Elementary Literacy Program. This includes record-keeping of student placements, evaluations, grades, and ensuring compliance with all relevant university and departmental policies.
Qualifications- Elementary Literacy Practicum Coach And Instructor
  • Earned master's or doctorate in Education, preferred Literacy, with a strong emphasis in early elementary literacy and the Science of Reading.
  • Expertise in early literacy, including theory, assessment, literacy processes, and a wide range of evidence-based instructional practices for working with linguistically and culturally diverse students.
  • Experience teaching in an early elementary literacy classroom for three or more years.
  • Training/Experience in literacy coaching training and structured literacy interventions (e.g. Orton-Gillingham)
  • Evidence of excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly working with groups such as faculty, university students, K-12 partners, K-6 students, and community partners.
Preference will be given to individuals who have the following characteristics:
  • Reading specialist or Reading teacher;
  • Experience teaching in a linguistically and culturally diverse K-6 school;
  • Understanding of working with children with reading difficulties or disabilities;
  • Experience working in a similar role within a university setting.
