Position Title: Managing Director of Development
Department : 7030|Development Office
ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Senior Director of Development for the Academic Major Gifts team, the Managing Director of Development is responsible for managing a portfolio of prospective donors on behalf of their assigned unit(s) and reaching both individual and team performance goals.
Individual Responsibilities
  • The Managing Director of Development will develop strong relationships with the Office of Development, Deans, faculty, staff, and colleagues in the Division of Advancement. All fundraising plans will be developed in collaboration with the Advancement Leadership and Deans, and align with university fundraising efforts, including the comprehensive campaign. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Serving as full-time fundraiser securing gifts and pledges of $100,000 or more with the aim of closing $1M-2.5M annually.
  • Effective portfolio management of 75-100 major gift prospects by developing and executing moves management strategies.
  • Achieving personal annual fundraising goals and metrics for strategic activities, major gift proposals submitted, and dollars committed.
  • Working with Senior Director of Development to develop annual business plan that includes performance goals and unit priorities.
  • Working collaboratively and offering prospect strategy counsel with advancement leadership and colleagues, serving as a resource and content expert for assigned unit(s).
  • Complying with all University, Advancement and Development policies and procedures.
  • Entering timely activity reports and proposals and maintaining accuracy of records by providing updates for constituent database following established protocols for use of data.
  • Actively participating in Advancement, Development, and unit team meetings and trainings.
Management Responsibilities
  • Participate in development of marketable unit/college fundraising priorities, strategy, and tracking.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase major gifts for strategic priorities, endowed funds, planned gifts, leadership annual gifts, and gifts-in-kind for assigned unit(s).
  • Prepare annual budget requests to the Development Leadership and authorizes expenses for assigned development team throughout the fiscal year.
  • Run reports and analyze data to monitor personal, team, and unit metrics, taking a proactive approach and creative problem solving to achieve goals.
  • Primary staff for dean, director, faculty, and other leadership on donor/prospect visits, trips, and events.
  • Manage up to two assigned development staff including hiring, onboarding, business planning, evaluating, mentoring and professional development.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3 or more years of experience as a major gift officer.
  • Track record of securing appointments and closing gifts at the $100,000 level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience closing major gifts in an academic setting.
  • Adherence to the highest ethical and strict confidentiality standards.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills with confidence to collaborate effectively with university leadership, executives, volunteers, donors, students, and other constituents.
  • Ability to lead and successfully work as part of a team while demonstrating the independence essential in managing a portfolio of prospects and multiple projects concurrently.
  • Empathetic disposition and perseverance; optimistic and positive attitude; and sensitivity to needs of the donors.
  • Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment, think critically, and proactively solve problems.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt, learn, and innovate according to changing needs, emerging opportunities, and best practices.
  • Commitment to excellence, collaboration, and continuous professional development.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with CRM or database systems and familiarity with and ability to comply with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, work after-hours, and on weekends.
