The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is currently accepting applications for a Laboratory Technician Non-Scientific Lab to support the operation of the Cyber Warrior Diversity program at the University. The position is contractual, full-time, non-exempt with limited benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a 100 percent grant funded position. (Salary Range: $43,404-$71,582.
About the Cyber Warrior Diversity Program
UMES’s Cyber Warrior Diversity program aims to train students in computer networking and cybersecurity. The Cyber Warrior Diversity program at UMES provides enrolled students with training to prepare them to pass and earn CompTIA certifications such as CompTIA A , CompTIA Network , and CompTIA Security .
About the School The School is home to five academic departments: Business, Management, and Accounting; Engineering and Aviation Sciences; Hospitality and Tourism Management; Computer Science and Engineering Technology; and The Built Environment. Additionally, the School offers several of its programs at University System of Maryland (USM) regional centers and off-campus locations including the Universities at Shady Grove, USM-Hagerstown, the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and the Salisbury Maryland Airport.
About the University Enrolling over 2,200 students, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a land-grant, historically black college founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy. Since its beginning, the institution has had several name changes and governing bodies. It was Maryland State College from 1948 until 1970 when it became one of the five campuses that formed the University of Maryland. In 1988, it became a member of the then eleven-campus (now thirteen) University of Maryland System, now known as the University System of Maryland. UMES is approved by the state of Maryland and fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The university is located approximately 15 miles south of Salisbury, Maryland, within easy commuting distance to Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York.
Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for computer hardware, software, networking, and general electrical engineering technology issues within the lab.
  • Manage shipping and handling equipment for online laboratory courses.
  • Install well-functioning LAN/WAN and other networks and manage components (servers, IPs etc.)
  • Provide supervision/assistance for the general safety, security, and arrangement of the laboratory area. Manage and maintain computer lab equipment and software.
  • Perform regular upgrades to ensure systems remain updated.
  • Maintain and inventories computers, software, printers, equipment, materials, and supplies. Disposes of surplus equipment and software in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment and maintains contact with appropriate vendors to coordinate repairs.
  • Research equipment needs and orders materials and supplies as necessary.
  • Keep records of repairs and fixes for future reference.
  • Works with students individually and in groups to provide direct assistance in accessing computer technology; orients students to the laboratory and helps students learn to use specific software and hardware.
  • Develop and maintain instructions for the use of specific software/hardware.
  • Provide information relating to the computer laboratories to students, staff, and instructors.
  • Supervise computer lab usage and ensure it is appropriately utilized.
  • Train faculty and staff on how to properly use lab equipment and software to aid in classroom instruction or research setup.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a related field.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Familiarity with, instrumentation, computers, and laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining equipment inventories and maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty, instructional staff, and students in a
  • customer support role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of relevant experience in computer technology.
  • Familiarity with computer networks and electrical systems.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to lift, transport, and deliver materials and stock supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments.
  • Ability to work proactively with minimal supervision.
