Job Description

General Summary

The Patient Access Manager will be responsible for the daily operations of Patient Access of assigned patient access areas to enable appropriate patients and families to access hospital services in an efficient and timely manner. The position will manage the following duties to include accurate registration of patients, insurance verification, up-front collections, financial counseling, screening of uninsured/or underinsured patients, scheduling and pre-registration activities. The position also works collaboratively with management of Business Office, HIM and hospital clinics/departments and physician practices. Duties also include: responsibility for administering hospital and department policies and procedures, complaint resolution, control of financial reimbursement as it relates to patient access activities and providing management support to patient registration activities and the service that exhibits an outstanding positive image to the public.

Reporting  Relationships

Reports to the Director of Patient Access. Level of Supervision: Limited – Requires independent effort with limited direct supervision; establishes course of action and develops own method to obtain results; recommends and/or implements policies and procedures in specific areas

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree required. Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. Certification from AAHAM or NAHAM encouraged. Three years related healthcare experience, two of which are in patient access (preferably in a hospital setting) required. Three years of managerial experience in patient access or revenue cycle functions are required.

Working Conditions

Works inside in a clean, fast paced environment, exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple demands. May be subject to irregular hours, exposure to disturbed patients and stressful situations. Potential for minimal exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as low or no exposure risk and does not require the completion of an annual testing but may require "just in time" testing if the need arises.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires frequent walking and standing.
  • Requires lifting and carrying supplies and equipment weighing up to 20lbs.
  • Requires bending, reaching for and grasping supplies, files, etc.
  • Requires visual acuity to ready charts, documents, and computer terminal.
  • Requires manual dexterity to enter data and operate office equipment.
