Core Job SummaryThe Clinical Instructor shall function under the supervision of the Program Director of the University of Miami Orthopaedic Surgery of the Spine Fellowship Program. The position of Clinical Instructor is a one-year experience that offers a unique blend of patient care, education and research.
Core Job Functions
  • Admission, consultation, evaluation, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of patients with general orthopedic spine problems for safe, effective and compassionate patient care. Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform and teach all essential and required procedures.
  • Acts as an instructor of clinical orthopedics to provide teaching, supervision and serve as a role model to residents in the program.
  • Identifies need for patient education and orders or provides education.
  • Comprehensively documents in patients’ charts in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient and family issues, including age, gender and cultural diversity.
  • Efficiently performs in emergent situations, including adherence to established clinic and hospital-specific protocols.
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge base including integration of skills.
  • Participates actively in all orthopaedic spine division educational activities and assumes responsibility for teaching residents, interns and medical students.
  • Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of legal issues in all aspects of patient care, incorporating risk management skills, and quality control measures.
  • Assist with recruitment activities for the Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship.
  • Participate in clinical and/or basic science research.

Successful completion of an ACGME accredited Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program.
Certification And LicensingState of Florida Medical Trainee Licensure.

Knowledge, Skills And Attitudes
  • Basic principles of primary and revision spine surgery.
  • Ability to prepare and present talks for discussion from a list of assigned spine topics.
  • Must work effectively with others as a member or leader of a health care team.]
  • Expected to treat everyone with respect and dignity.
  • Complete charts, forms and records in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Promptly respond to inquiries, requests, written documents required for patient care needs.
  • Sensitivity and responsiveness to patient’s cultural and social circumstances.
  • Commitment to ethical principles, particularly those related to provision or withholding of care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent and business practices.
Department Specific Functions
  • 40% Back to Play program/Research – management/dissemination.
  • 20% Teaching/Service.
  • 20% Internal/External grant funding search/proposal preparation.
  • 20% Athletics service (Baseball performance/research).
  • Build a Back to Play program for athletes after ACL injury – adapt to other areas in upper/lower body injuries.
  • Support the clinics of Drs. Kaplan and Baraga through athlete testing in the Sports Medicine Lab.
  • Contribute to human performance initiatives through collaborations across university departments.
  • Provide support to Athletics (UM Baseball biomechanics support).
  • Pursue external funding opportunities and represent the department at national conferences.
  • Provide research training and opportunities for medical, graduate, and undergraduate students that are interested in a career in orthopedic sports medicine.
  • Emphasis placed on developing students’ skills to collaborate between research and clinical practice in their careers.
  • Teach and train undergraduate/graduate students in technology for sport.
  • Emphasis placed on available hardware, objective human performance/injury concepts, development/implementation of data-analysis tools, and alternative strategies for biomechanics and motor control evaluation.
