The incumbent supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures. Participates in the publication of significant results. Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice. Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research. Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment. Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies. Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as necessary.CORE QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s Degree in relevant fieldNo prior experience requiredDEPARTMENT ADDENDUMDepartment Specific FunctionsSPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Research Associate 1 will interact with a group of basic and applied research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and with the industry. The focus of the work will be cell encapsulation for immunoisolation of cell transplants.ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The incumbent will be responsible to conduct experimental work in the lab that include (i) isolation and characterization of murine and human FRCs by flow cytometry (ii) immunofluorescence / confocal microscopy, (iii) gene expression analysis, (iv) flow cytometry analysis, (v) engineered FRC reticula fabrication and characterization, (vi) coculture studies with beta cells and antigen-specific T cells, (vii) characterization of cell and tissues from transgenic mouse modelsAdditionally, the incumbent will be responsible to (a) interact with other lab members; (b) design and discuss experimental plans; (c) organize and prepare the laboratory for experiments; (d) document the procedures completed; (e) analyze experimental data, including statistical analysis; (f) prepare figures, slides, posters and/or videos for publication and for presentation at scientific conferences; (g) develop and troubleshoot equipment, as needed; (h) contribute to the write up of data for publications, reports and grants; (i) present data summaries orally to lab and institute members and collaborators, as needed; (j) reading and understanding the scientific literature; (j) maintain the lab in order and accomplish assigned lab task in time; (i) order supplies if needed.Department Specific Qualifications Education:B.S. in Biomedical Engineering or relevant disciplinesCertification and Licensing:IACUC small animal handlingExperience:Bench work and sterile cell culture#LI-GD1The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.UHealth-University of Miami Health System, South Florida's only university-based health system, provides leading-edge patient care powered by the ground breaking research and medical education at the Miller School of Medicine.
