Summary

The Safety and Preparedness Coordinator works under the supervision of the Pathology Compliance Manger and has a reporting relationship to the CLIA Laboratory Director to ensure the Department of Pathology operating units (clinical laboratories and other administrative functions) are following all safety and disaster preparedness requirements.

Collaborates with laboratory leadership, management, and staff to ensure all appropriate local, state, and federal regulations are followed. Provides consultative services to internal staff and external clients and performs appropriate activities to document compliance with applicable safety requirements. Prepares safety compliance reports for management. Leverages lessons learned through execution of duties to contribute to the mission of Pathology to transform the patient experience, providing information and expertise that is useful in carrying out our mission of innovation from the Pathology platform. Analyzes, compares, and evaluates various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.

Responsibilities*

Safety & Quality

  • Partners with Michigan Medicine Safety Management Services (SMS), UM Environmental Health & Safety Department (EHS), UM Division of Public Safety and Security, and relevant State of Michigan agencies to ensure the Department of Pathology meets the standards, policies and procedures established by these internal and external entities to ensure a safe and secure working environment.
  • Partners with OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) to meet standards for employee health guidelines, requirements, and safety initiatives.
  • Ensures policies and procedures in departmental Health and Safety document control system meet institutional and regulatory requirements. Responsible for updating and distributing policies and procedures as necessary, and ensuring departmental staff are properly trained on these policies and procedures.
  • Establishes safety priorities for the Department of Pathology which reflect institutional priorities as well as internal/external data indicating high risk and/or areas for improvement.
  • Oversight over all Pathology Safety Audits and maintains safety audit scheduling and monitoring of all area for their annual completion.
  • Partners with departmental leaders to ensure success of implementing safety priorities.
  • Chairs Departmental Safety Committee and is responsible for setting agenda, recording of discussion and decisions, distribution of minutes, and follow-up to ensure follow-through and compliance with decisions.
  • Identifies opportunities through safety responsibilities to help develop the Department of Pathology into a High Reliability Organization.
  • Involvement in departmental compliance and quality initiatives.

Disaster Preparedness

  • In consultation with key stakeholders, develops and implements the Department of Pathology Emergency Preparedness Plan, including drills and exercises to ensure appropriate employee response to emergent events.
  • Ensures each lab has an updated and complete Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) that is accessible to lab personnel.
  • Ensures the Department of Pathology has a departmental-level Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) that is accessible by all departmental employees.
  • Serves as coordinator of departmental activities in Michigan Medicine disaster drills.
  • Develops, maintains, and audits disaster response processes to ensure departmental readiness.
  • Serves as Department of Pathology representative on Michigan Medicine's Emergency Management Operations Committee (EMOC) along with Pathology Operations Directors.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Associates or a Bachelor's degree in a science-related field
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Experience complying with regulatory requirements and implementing safety and/or emergency preparedness activities

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science
  • Familiarity with document control computer systems
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local safety regulations
  • Experience as a medical laboratory scientist

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hours position will be on the day shift, hours are Monday through Friday and may vary between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Does require occasional scheduling flexibility for special events, projects, audits and inspections.

Located at the NCRC Complex which is located at 2800 Plymouth Rd, Ann Arbor, MI.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
