**Summary**

The Patient Safety Specialist Senior serves on the institutional Patient Safety Event Team. This role reviews adverse and near miss events to bring forth for institutional knowledge and triaging in order to determine approach to event review. The Patient Safety Specialist is responsible for facilitating adverse event reviews using a systematic analysis process to determine event timeline, root causes, and strong action plans to mitigate risk. The position will work closely with system-level leaders to address system gaps and action plans coordinated across the institution where appropriate.This position reports to the Patient Safety Event Team Manager.

**Responsibilities***

45% Respond to adverse and near miss events as a member of the Safety Event Management Team. Review safety events for trends or system concerns and make recommendations that guide adverse event analysis and documentation for accreditation readiness and institutional improvement. Facilitate team review of adverse events to ensure accurate and thorough analyses that establish root causes/system issues and develops subsequent strong action plans to prevent recurrence of harm with a deference to design systems that proactively address harm. Consider institutional impact of system improvement strategies and communicate with clinical management and administration. Conduct educational training and coaching to medical, nursing and support staff on clinical safety and patient safety topics and lead/participate in patient safety efforts for the health system.

45% Coordinate the development, implementation and administration of programs, projects and activities. Provide staff support to executive groups, including coordination of agenda and assistance in preparing and reviewing materials for discussion. Responsible for management, performance, and completion of moderate to complex projects. Responsible for assembling project team, assigning individuals responsibilities, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedule to ensure timely completion of project. Must be familiar with the project objectives, as well as the role and function of each team member to effectively coordinate the activities of the team. Employees in this classification typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

10% Other duties as assigned.

**Required Qualifications***

At least 4 years clinical background in Nursing or an Allied Health field is necessary.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.

Must have more than 2 years of project management, performance improvement, or patient safety experience.

Candidate must have excellent communication skills, including experience facilitating teams.

Excellent written, oral and presentation skills are necessary.

Knowledge of health care delivery.

Ability to analyze data for patient safety and areas of potential improvement.

Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

Demonstrated knowledge of system-level thinking and root cause analysis.

**Desired Qualifications***

Experience as a high-level health care professional with clinical knowledge of health care delivery and factors that influence the level of care provided.

Enthusiasm and self-initiative for making a difference in the level of quality care the Health Care System delivers.

Demonstrated project management or performance improvement success in a complex patient care environment.

Additional certification such as CPHQ, CPPS, or Lean/Six Sigma.Patient safety training through healthcare collaborative, hospital training program, or IHI Open School.

Demonstrated knowledge of high reliability. Knowledge of University policies, rules and regulations.

Knowledge of UMHS/UMHHC policies/procedures and organizational structure.

**Background Screening**

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
