Summary

We are looking for an innovative, driven, and experienced person to join our team as a Quality Assurance Coordinator for the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium (HMS). HMS is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network funded Collaborative Quality Initiative. It is a data-driven collaborative made up of hospitals across the State of Michigan with a goal of improving the quality of care for hospitalized medical patients.

The Quality Assurance Coordinator will function as a co-lead on one of HMS 3 main initiatives: vascular access (PICCs and Midlines), antimicrobial use, and sepsis. The Quality Assurance Coordinator is a key resource representative who works with the HMS Physician Leads and Collaborative members to improve the efficiency and quality of the delivery of healthcare services in one of HMS three main initiatives. This includes analysis of data, identification of trends, coordinating data visualizations, providing education and partnering with member hospitals on their area of focus to our Collaborative members when needed.

Within this role, you will be an essential part of the Coordinating Center for HMS and work on a Quality Assurance team of four who report to the Assistant Program Manager. Currently, HMS has 69 hospitals/program participants. We also may recruit additional hospitals in the future.

Responsibilities*

Project-Related Work:

  • Providing external support to collaborative hospitals for quality improvement initiatives, including provision of data reports, relevant literature, educational programming, access to experts, and other resources
  • Creating educational resources based on needs of collaborative members
  • Facilitating adherence to performance metrics, guiding participation in quality improvement projects, and providing excellent customer service to program participants
  • Evaluating the performance of program participants through site visits, audits (at least two per year), and ongoing communication of program updates and other items of relevance to the programs
  • Suggesting options for improving quality, identifying potential problems, as well as recommending and implementing solutions
  • Collaborating with physician leads, statisticians, data analysts, and other members of the team to accomplish initiative goals
  • Presenting on important aspects of initiative of focus in public forums
  • Taking the lead on establishing consistent data collection, procedures, and reporting for initiative of focus when needed
  • Collaborating with the HMS database administrator and data analytics team to perform basic data management such assisting with the modifications/new builds of the data entry system in which hospitals submit data, etc
  • Facilitate and lead breakout sessions at tri-annual collaborative meetings
  • Additional duties as assigned

Site Support:

  • Provide excellent customer service to Clinical Data Abstractors (CDAs) for each of the participating sites when providing educational materials and responding to questions regarding initiative of focus
  • Promote performance excellence in data abstraction and quality improvement by providing comprehensive, ongoing, and impromptu support and customer service to the CDA for each of the participating sites as it relates to initiative of focus
  • Responding to sites may occur via email, phone, virtual webinar consultations/presentations, and in-person audits to troubleshoot barriers and promote efficiency efforts
  • Act as a resource to HMS Education Specialist on the preparation, implementation, and management of educational content and training for CDAs at collaborative hospital sites within initiative of focus
  • Conduct at least one CDA training per year
  • Identifying challenges that may prevent the program participants from functioning at high levels of performance within initiative of focus and working with the participants to resolve these matters
  • Collaborating with data analysis team to recognize and investigate data variances, as well as facilitate variance resolution by working with appropriate Coordinating Center staff and site members/participants
  • Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree in a health care-related field or quality
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a health care setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program evaluation, process improvement, and/or outcomes measurement is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated in oral, written, and presentation formats
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Solid time management skills, including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills working with diverse team members
  • Experienced with web-based computer systems required, familiarity and proficiency with MS Office products
  • Individual must be able to travel to meetings and to member hospitals across the state. Travel can be up to 1-2 times a week during certain times of the year

Desired Qualifications*

  • Masters degree in a health care field or quality
  • Experience in an inpatient healthcare setting
  • Experience with data management tools, healthcare analytics, and different Electronic Medical Record/Health Information Technology systems/vendors
  • Working knowledge of Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan policies and procedures
  • Experience with survey methodology and preparation
  • Experience with public speaking

Work Locations

This position is located at Arbor Lakes, Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will be a hybrid role, combining both in-person and some remote work options, in accordance with Michigan Medicine Remote Work Policy.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
