**Summary**
The Department of Cardiac Surgery, Section of Health Services Research and Quality, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Area Specialist to join our research team. This role is up to 0.8 FTE (32 hours/wk) position. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in managing and analyzing complex, longitudinal datasets to inform healthcare system evaluation and national health policy redesign.
**Responsibilities***
Assist in the collection, management, and analysis of complex healthcare datasets.
Utilize programming languages such as Python and SQL for data manipulation and management.
Apply advanced analytical techniques using Python packages like igraph or networkx.
Prepare data for statistical analysis and contribute to the development of research papers and reports.
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to discuss findings and methodologies.
**Required Qualifications***
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student work experience.
Minimum 1 year experience in a related field.
Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
Experience using igraph or networkx.
Ability to manage large volumes of data and perform detailed analysis.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
**Desired Qualifications***
Direct experience in managing and supporting projects using large administrative datasets (e.g., Medicare or commercial claims).
Familiarity with SAS and Stata is highly desirable.
**Work Schedule**
This position is remote. There may be instances for in-person meetings.
**Additional Information**
**This position is term-limited** for about 3 years with the possibility of renewal based on need and available funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
**Background Screening**
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
