Position Summary

The Section on Child Safety and Well-Being (CSWB), is seeking a Family Advocate to provide a comprehensive range of professional social services, psychosocial assessments, pediatric therapy services, and case management services for the CSWB Program. CSWB is a subspecialty clinic of the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics that provides expert integrated care to children with concerns for maltreatment. The Family Advocate’s duties will include:

  • Provides crisis counseling and supportive case management specific to the needs of families affected by child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and other forms of maltreatment, and may provide support to children living in out-of-home placements.
  • Provides mental health services to children and adolescents that have been seen for medical care with the CSWB.
  • Develops, organizes and facilitates a psycho-educational support group for non-offending caregivers.
  • Provides and or arranges for therapeutic, economic and social interventions that positively affect families and patient’s ability to manage the aftermath of child maltreatment.
  • Provides education and guidance around child maltreatment medical protocols for community agencies, new employees, and students of all levels.
  • Oversees the establishment and maintenance of case files, referrals and other related documents.
  • Makes decisions independently in a clinical setting that involves a high degree of specialized knowledge of working with the dynamics of child and family trauma.

Successful candidates must have a sensitive and professional manner when dealing with agencies and families involved in the investigation of child abuse, child sexual abuse and sexual assault, and neglect allegations. The legal implications of child maltreatment, as it presents in a medical setting, requires that the individual have an understanding of the HIPAA Privacy rule. This individual must possess excellent computer skills including knowledge of all MS Office Applications (Access, Word, Excel, and have experience developing Power Point presentations for educational purposes). This individual must be detail oriented and possess organization and communication skills. Duties will also include calendaring/scheduling, answering patient calls, maintaining files, and other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • CPR and Basic First Aid Certificate may be a requirement for some positions in this classification.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; at least 6 months of directly related experience which may include internship and/or practicum.Certification/LicensureNM licensure as LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level, OR licensed out of state and eligible for NM licensure.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing crisis intervention to children and adolescents and their families who have experienced trauma.
  • Experience providing anticipatory guidance, economic, and social interventions for patients and their families.
  • Experience in providing mental health services to children that have been impacted by trauma.
  • Experience in assessing children and adolescents for suicidal ideations or self-harming behaviors.
  • Experience facilitating medical services for families and patients as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated through the interview
  • Ability to work effectively with a team of administrative and clinical staff.
  • Familiarity of diverse communities including those of individuals and families in crisis
  • Advanced coordination and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be flexible while staying professional and positive in a changing environment.
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams, CYFD and Law Enforcement Agencies.
  • Experience organizing and facilitating psycho-educational groups.
  • Experience obtaining intake information, triaging patients and emergency and scheduled visits.
  • Experience with data collection and formatting and preparing reports to meet contractual obligations.
  • Experience documentating in an electronic health record, particularly in Cerner
