Position SummaryThe Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study/Women’s Interagency HIV Study Combined Cohort Study ( MWCCS ) is a collaborative research effort to understand and reduce the impact of chronic health conditions that affect people living with HIV . The MWCCS , which is administered by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and supported by 13 other NIH institutes, builds on previous scientific and clinical research from the Women’s Interagency HIV Study ( WIHS ) and the Multicenter AIDS Cohorts Study ( MACS ), the largest and longest running research cohorts of women and men, respectively, with HIV or at risk for HIV infection in the U.S.
MWCCS participants will be seen at least twice per year for the core study visit and as needed for sub-studies (according to the individual protocols). Study visits consist of a comprehensive interview covering the participant’s medical and psychosocial history, neurocognitive testing, specimen collection, and a clinical exam. Sub-studies may include the collection of additional clinical data and/or specimens. Sub-study visits can be as short or as long as 24 hours, depending on the protocol.
The Medical Laboratory Technician will be part of the UNC MWCCS site. Working under the general supervision of the Clinical Research Manager, s/he will be responsible for working as part of a team to complete a wide range of duties, including: recruiting individuals in community and research settings; screening and enrolling participants into specific protocols; conducting relevant study procedures (e.g., laboratory specimen collection, interviews, and/or clinical assessments); documenting study progress and preparing progress reports; participating in QA/QC activities; and assisting with administrative tasks as delegated by the Clinical Research Manager.
The Medical Laboratory Technician is expected to assist with all aspects of protocol implementation, from the initial development of study-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) through the reporting of study outcomes. S/he may be required to serve as the lead protocol coordinator for one or more projects. The Clinical Research Assistant will be expected to attend training for each protocol and foster and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary for the successful performance of all study assessments.
Minimum Education And Experience RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA ) regulations.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
  • Certified technical training in phlebotomy as evidenced by ability to perform phlebotomy in a clinical setting
  • Interest in public health and HIV research.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills; capacity to perform and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Flexible to daily changes in scope of work, while maintaining patient safety and data quality.
  • Position requires excellent PC Computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
The UNC MWCCS and STAR cohorts operate at two off-campus clinics (Raleigh/Durham) and staff are often travelling to complete study visits or assessments. The candidate must have the ability to travel between University offices and off-site clinic locations and when necessary, work nights and weekends. Because travel is an integral part of this position, a valid driver’s license is required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperienceBilingual (Spanish).
Preference will be given to candidates whose background and experience reflect an ability to engage effectively with the target populations.
