Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement to include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
This 2-year term position will support a broad scope of work related to sustainable scholarship. Sustainable scholarship is the process and activities that make scholarship more affordable, sustainable, transparent, and open. To date, the UNC Libraries has focused on transforming collections spending to support more open and sustainable models. This position will focus on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of bibliometric data and other metrics, enabling data driven decision making to advance the Libraries’ sustainable scholarship goals.
The Open Knowledge and Research Impact Librarian will have knowledge of open access, scholarly communications, copyright law, and collection development. They will gather, analyze, and interpret publication data on UNC authors and will analyze publishing costs and compare models. The librarian will develop and maintain a deep understanding of author, publishing, and collecting trends, and will advise on how to align library collection development and scholarly communications priorities within those trends. The librarian will carry out these responsibilities collaboratively with the Scholarly Communications Office, the AUL, Collections Strategies and Services and the Impact Measurement and Visualization (IMV) team among others.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires the Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree (or foreign degree equivalent). In specialized libraries, may substitute an advanced degree in the field of specialization (e.g., legal degree for a law library, or a history degree for a special historical collection within the library setting).
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent
Familiarity with the issues of scholarly publishing as they relate to academic libraries and university researchers
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Familiarity with bibliographic data sources
Expertise in using processes and tools to download, store, clean, analyze, and present accurate bibliographic data
Demonstrated ability in using statistical analysis and in making clear presentations and visualizations
Familiarity with different modes of bibliometric network analysis and major bibliometric indicators
Experience working with APIs to download and manipulate large datasets
Experience identifying the best software for different types of analysis or visualization
Familiarity with a wide range of knowledge discovery tools
Awareness of principles for responsible use of metrics
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated understanding of basic copyright concepts and how they apply in academic settings
Demonstrated understanding of the fundamentals of library collection development
Demonstrated understanding of open knowledge issues in the academy and the role of open repositories.
