Primary Purpose Of Organizational UnitThe Department of Genetics is a Basic Science Department in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The mission of our department embodies research and education while serving as a focal point for integrating basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is comprised of 28 Tenure-Track Faculty positions, approximately 23 joint appointments, 37 Research/Clinical Faculty positions, 14 EHRA Non-Faculty positions, 24 Postdoctoral Research Fellows and graduate students working in labs. There are 60 permanent full-time SHRA positions and 141 graduate students in the graduate programs.
Our faculty members are renowned geneticist who manage their own research laboratories. Our teaching centers focuses on preparing our graduate and medical students to be able to adapt to the genetics and genomics workforce. The Department of Genetics is strongly committed to supporting its current community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and to securing the best new scientists and staff, setting its sight on new research opportunities in the future. One major goal is to translate genomic advances into cutting-edge science, to advance the practical application of genomic research to medicine and to define social, legal and business policies as we look to the future.
Position Summary THIS IS A TIME - LIMITED POSITION WITH AN ESTIMATED DURATION OF 2 YEARS . The purpose of the Social/Clinical Research Assistant- Junior Biocurator will be to support ongoing curation efforts underway in the research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg, primarily the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen). Curation support will entail assisting the ClinGen working groups and expert panels with literature data collection to enable assessment the strength of evidence for gene-disease relationships and pathogenicity of genetic variants. This individual will learn to read and critically evaluate the primary literature to identify, synthesize, and present relevant data under the supervision of the Biocuration Supervisor and/or Senior biocurators.
The selected candidate will be expected to participate in lab meetings, biocurator meetings, and research meetings within UNC . With supervision and training, the candidate will interact with clinical domain experts and may present data to curation groups on conference calls. Successful job performance will require learning and implementing the curation framework and protocols developed by ClinGen under the supervision and training from senior staff.
Minimum Education And Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperienceThe selected candidate must have a basic understanding of genetics, biochemistry, and physiology, and must have prior experience with data collection from medical and scientific literature. The selected candidate must be able to collect data from the literature in order to assess relationships between genes, variants, and clinical diagnoses.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And ExperiencePreferred qualifications include the ability to comprehend and apply curation processes to various human genetics curation projects and will have previous gene and/or variant curation experience. In addition, ideal candidates would possess working knowledge and adept skills with web-based annotation tools to support curation. Knowledge of online genetic databases such as OMIM , ExAC, gnomAD, ClinVar and LOVD . Familiarity with basic Excel, Power point, Word, and Google docs.
