Department Summary
Finance and Administration is a vibrant and varied portfolio serving all aspects of campus life. Our employees perform a wide range of functions including offering essential financial tools and support to the university’s many departments, providing key resources to employees, and keeping campus safe, clean, accessible and beautiful.
Established in 2012, the Transportation Services Department is an auxiliary unit within Finance and Administration whose goal is to provide customer-oriented sustainable transportation and parking programs and services to students, employees, and visitors to the University of Oregon. Transportation Services covers its expenses and operations through revenue generation, largely through permit sales, meter revenue, events, and citations. The unit’s annual budget is approximately $2 million. Transportation Services maintains more than 3,800 parking spaces on or adjacent to campus in more than 60 lots and two multi-level parking garages.
Position Summary
The Duck Rides Program Assistant is a professional position within Transportation Services at the University of Oregon. The position will provide day-to-day leadership, guidance and support for the Duck Rides program. The Program Assistant will act as a liaison for program participants and student employees. The Program Assistant will provide nightly shift leadership, and dispatch support.
Duck Rides is a collective service dedicated to providing accessible, inclusive, and safe transportation. Duck Rides operates throughout the Eugene/Springfield communities. Duck Rides operates as an evening shuttle service between 6pm-midnight, with some ad-hoc daytime event shuttle service, and is open to all UO students, faculty, and staff. The Program Assistant plays a primary role in oversight of nightly operations with the program's student employees. This position must engage in dynamic, people-focused leadership, emphasizing ongoing driver training and coaching, outreach and marketing, and a willingness to fully engage with the UO Community.
While coordinating assigned program activities, the Duck Rides Program Assistant may have regular daily contact with all members of the University of Oregon campus community: students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and members of the public. The Program Assistant must exercise sound judgment in safeguarding the students and customers that work for and utilize the program. This includes responsibility for all elements of supervision of approximately 12 – 16 student staff on a nightly basis. This position will assess student training needs and conduct training to address these needs. The Duck Rides Program Assistant will sometimes work with a high level of independence dealing with non-routine situations after normal business hours and will need to be able to understand and apply policies and procedures without direct supervisor guidance. Work is reviewed as needed by the Shuttle Program Manager. This position will often work evening hours and may also be expected to be on call for special operations and athletic events. This position must adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting and Title IX responsibilities.
Driver RequirementIt is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver’s certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.
Essential PersonnelThis unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
Work ScheduleTuesday – Saturday 1530 - 0000; Sunday – Thursday 1530 – 0000 when school is in session; Monday – Friday 0900 – 1730 during school breaks. This position follows the Academic calendar. The Program Assistant must have the ability to work a flexible schedule.
Minimum Requirements
  • Three years of office experience which included two years at full performance level and experience generating documents; and
  • Lead work responsibility or coordination of office procedures.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain legible handwriting, type accurately and efficiently, and prepare a standardized report; candidates fluent in a second language are highly regarded.
  • Ability to consistently conduct self in a mature, professional and respectful demeanor with equal regard to all contacts.
  • Ability to use established policy in solving customer service and programmatic issues.
  • Ability to follow directions and administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned duties.

  • Ability to coordinate services and operations, which will include tracking, scheduling, and delivery of services, ensuring compliance, and explaining laws, rules, regulations, and policies.

  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience working with active transportation options.
  • Experience effectively mentoring and advising students from traditionally/historically underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Experience with leadership development theories and practices.
  • Experience providing services to people with disabilities.
  • Experience with Google Apps, MS Office, smartphone apps, social media platforms, and other current and emerging technology.
  • Language competency in Spanish, Arabic or Chinese.
  • Knowledge of the University of Oregon campus and community.
  • Commercial and/or passenger carrying driving experience
  • Familiarity with Smith System.
