Environmental Health & Safety Specialist - 502539
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, the Environmental Health & Safety Specialist promotes safety across campus while helping to maintain compliance with a variety of environmental health and safety regulations that impact the University. Primary areas of responsibility include laboratory safety, hazardous materials, occupational safety, environmental programs, and industrial hygiene. The successful candidate has the ability to develop and professionally contribute to proactive EHS programs and work collaboratively with other professionals across the University.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Laboratory Safety Program: Performs routine inspections within the laboratories to ensure compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard as well as well as other areas of research safety (biosafety, radiation safety, animal safety).
  • Indoor Air Quality, Mold, Industrial "Hygiene: Perform surveys related to these areas, analyzing data, works with stakeholders to resolve identified hazards.
  • Occupational Safety: Performs inspections of operational areas to ensure compliance with LOTO, confined space, PPE, etc. Works with stakeholders to correct issues found.
  • Environmental and Hazardous Materials Management: Helps with the management of regulated hazardous materials and hazardous waste. Assists Facilities in maintaining compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Training: Develops and conducts training for diverse groups across campus utilizing in person and online platforms.
  • Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be able to work under limited supervision and exercise sound independent judgment
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new responsibilities.
  • Sound knowledge of OSHA EPA, NFPA and other applicable regulations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, Adobe Acrobat, and the ability to learn specialized software packages used by the department and University.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships both inside and outside of the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, policies, and other written materials
  • Ability to develop and conduct training programs.
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in safety, industrial hygiene or closely related field.
  • Professional designation preferred.
  • Work experience in higher education preferred.
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 8 (Hiring Range $64,210.00 to $85,072.00 annually)
