Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE

Admissions Screener positions are Time-As-Reported (TAR) assignments with an end date that allow individual(s) to work approximately five months (July-November) based upon the amount of application files received and the needs of the organization. Screener positions supplement the resources needed to reach current screening levels and offer assistance and expertise to the Admissions Committee. Screeners function primarily as first reviewers for the Admissions Office and are expected to read on average five files per hour. Screeners utilize a holistic process, thoroughly reviewing academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal essays, MCAT scores, as well as additional application materials. Screeners must summarize their observations in a web-based system and make a final recommendation on each applicant. Applications are assigned by the Admissions Coordinator.


NOTE: This position is end-dated, and expected to last from July 2022 through November 2022.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Credentials Review:

  • Verifies applicants meet citizenship requirements and confirms that the information displayed in each applicants on-line file is accurate (10%).
  • Reviews the academic rigor of the courses presented on the academic transcript(s) and ensures the appropriate pre-requisite courses were completed with satisfactory grades (15%).
  • Ensures that the minimum number of recommendations and/or committee letters is sufficient to evaluate students for admission purposes. Follows-up with applicants or schools for missing required documentation necessary to complete the evaluation, if needed (10%).

Documentation and Recommendations for Admissibility:

  • Screens a minimum of 500 MD applications to determine if the student should or should not be invited for an interview (10%).
  • Summarizes screening observations with notes in the AMP system and enters clear notes to support interview recommendations (10%).
  • Enters screening recommendation (invite, reject, high priority, or AMS Consideration) into the AMP system to facilitate the movement of files for further review (10%).
  • Completes required comprehensive descriptive notes to guide the Veteran Screener and the Associate Dean (10%).
  • Screens applicants for the AMSNY Post-Baccalaureate program who need additional educational enrichment prior to enrolling in our MD program (10%).

General Responsibilities:

  • Attends administrative meetings with the admissions staff
  • Attends one full committee meeting per month
  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree requied
  • No work experience required
  • 1 year of experience in a selective post-secondary admissions, advising, or counseling office preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with all levels within an organization as well as perspective MD candidates required;
  • Demonstrated customer service experience that incorporates a global perspective along with commitment to diversity required;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality required;
  • Detail-oriented required;
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills required;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Work and Excel; proficiency in Zoom or other online communication platform or ability to learn quickly required.
  • Weekend and evening work is likely.
