Responsibilities

The Registered Occupational Therapist's job will be to provide rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages with temporary or chronic physical and mental disability. This will be done through purposeful activity that will include manual and creative skills, educational and recreational activities, facilitation techniques, developmental skills and various other techniques as applicable to the specific needs of the acutely and chronically ill. Treatment of patients will be to improve the patient's physical function as it relates to Activities of Daily living and adaptability to the patient’s living environment. Evaluates patients referred to Occupational Therapy by written or verbal orders prescribed by a Medical Doctor or D.O to determine their current physical and functional status and assess their potential benefit from Occupational Therapy Services. Develop Plan of Care Therapy Programs for individual in-patients and out-patients. Evaluates, records, and reports patients progress for review by other members of the rehabilitation team and care management team. Prepares and fits splints for functional upper extremities as ordered. Plans, manages and modifies patient treatment techniques which may include therapeutic exercises; Therapeutic Activity; Self-Care Management; Cognitive retraining, sensory processing, neuromuscular reeducation; Administration of therapeutic modalities such as electrical stimulation, heat and cold.: Performs ADL's with patients to include grooming, dressing, bathing and bathroom transfers. Assists patients in use of devices including walkers, canes and crutches during activities of daily living. Requisitions supplies and equipment. Provides a safe treating environment within the Occupational Therapy Department. Provides for economic use of hospital equipment and supplies. Provides direct patient treatments. Ensures safety of the patient while he/she is in the Occupational Therapy Department. Utilizes proper body mechanics when moving and transferring patients and moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to essential functions. Maintains departmental and patient records. Charts daily progress notes for patients under their care. Abides by all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values. Adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality. Assists in instruction of new staff and personnel and will participate as clinical instructor with assigned OT and COTA students from cooperating universities. Desire to work with and for people with temporary and/or chronic mental, physical, or developmental disabilities. Knowledge of medical terminology is needed to understand patient evaluation and to chart patient progress satisfactorily. Knowledge of and experience in various movement techniques that can be utilized by patients to build strength and promote function in upper and lower extremities as well as enhance one's self-esteem and independence. Good common sense and ability to reason are needed to organize activities and use available supplies to support treatment programs. An attitude of firm kindness in dealing with patients is necessary. Must be able to hold in confidence all matters of a personal nature regarding the patient and/or his family coming to his or her knowledge and to disclose such information only when it is in the best interest of the patient. Ability to be versatile in dealing with a variety of patients and treatment programs. Regular and prompt attendance. Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required. Related duties as required.

Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved program in occupational therapy from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and licensure with the state of Alabama as an Occupational Therapist.
