Job Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty positionas Assistant Teaching Professor/Access Services Librarian in the UniversityLibraries Gulf Coast Library.
The Access Services Librarian is responsible for the supervision andadministration of circulation, document delivery, interlibrary loan, reserves, and collection management. The position coordinates access servicesfunctions with colleagues at two other libraries, reports to the Head of GulfCoast Libraries, and directly supervises Access Services employees at GulfCoast Library.The position is expectedto research trends in library access services and recommend new approaches topatron services and offerings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Manages the operations of the access services unitand resolves daily operational challenges to maximize unit efficiency;oversees circulation operations, including ensuring accuracy of patron andcirculation records in the library services platform; ensures properfiscal management of monies collected at the circulation desk; overseesdocument delivery and interlibrary loan operations, ensuring compliancewith resource sharing agreements, vendor licensing agreements, and copyrightlaws as they pertain to ILL; oversees course reserve operations, includingensuring that copyright compliance is met; oversees shelving of librarymaterials; monitors unit compliance with all relevant university policiesand state and federal regulations and laws; coordinates policies andprocedures with other access services personnel throughout the UniversityLibraries system.
  2. Supervises access services staff, includingassigned student employees and part-time Reference librarians.Responsibilities include, but are notlimited to: leads the hiring search process, evaluates job performance,and, as needed, makes recommendations for termination; trains newly hiredstaff, provides ongoing training as needed, and facilitates opportunitiesfor development of relevant knowledge and skills; plans, assigns, anddirects work, while managing workload; revises position descriptions asneeded; manages work schedules to ensure adequate service desk staffingduring all hours of operation. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays inrotation with other Public Services personnel may be required.
  3. Coordinates matters of Gulf Coast Library buildinguse and security to provide an environment conducive to learning andresearch; oversees building safety and security, including tracking andreporting maintenance issues to administration; coordinates maintenance ofbuilding security systems, emergency exits, electronic door accesscontrols, and elevators; coordinates with the University Police Departmentregarding library security; contributes to the development and executionof emergency procedures and ensures that access services staff on dutyhave received appropriate training on emergency response procedures.
  4. Ensures the provision of excellent customerservices.Activities include butare not limited to:resolves patronconcerns in a professional manner while striving for a high degree ofpatron satisfaction; identifies and recommends changes to services,policies, and procedures to improve satisfaction with library services;develops and facilitates customer service training for access servicesstaff and student employees.
  5. Assists with the implementation of a comprehensivelibrary assessment program using existing library data sources and developingappropriate assessment and usability instruments. Provides analysis oflibrary data to support decision making.
  6. Participates in outreach initiatives that seek toengage students, faculty, and staff with library services, resources, andfacilities.Provides reference anddirectional assistance to library patrons in person, by telephone, and viaelectronic communication methods.
  7. Engages in scholarship and professional developmentactivities and provides service to the Libraries, the University, and thelibrary profession to fulfill the expectations of a faculty member.Collaborates with public and other librarians to lead USM's Science Caf on theCoast.Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in library and/or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent advanced degree and experience.

Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experienceproviding access services, such as circulation, reserves, or stacks maintenance,in an academic library. Knowledge of copyright issues asapplied to access services. Knowledge of customer serviceprinciples. Experience with the Alma, Primo, and Tipasa systems.
