General Notes

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled extreme rainfall, urban and tropical studies focused postdoctoral fellow to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in atmospheric science, precipitation datasets, satellite remote sensing, surface hydrology, and data science, with a focus on investigating the extreme rain events. The candidate will be based at UT Austin and be affiliated in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The researcher will get an opportunity to actively collaborate with different research groups at UT Austin. Austin is a highly vibrant city and provides access to numerous activities beyond the research and academic experience through UT Austin. Under the supervision of Dr. Dev Niyogi, this research will investigate the complex relation between extreme rains, tropical systems, urbanization, and hydrological impacts.

Purpose

To investigate the complex relation between extreme rains, tropical systems, urbanization, and hydrological impacts.

Responsibilities

  • Strong programming skills in Python, Linux, and shell script languages for data processing and visualization of simulation.

  • Analyze and diagnose the impacts of extreme weather systems such as extreme rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones.

  • Mentor students in research, as needed.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills.

  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Earth and Atmospheric Engineering, Meteorology, Hydrology or related field within the last three years.

  • Experience with processing satellite, radar and in-situ precipitation in extreme weather.

  • Experience in working with hydrological model.

  • Strong background in tropical cyclone, meteorology and surface hydrologyPrior experience working with High-Performance computing (HPC) systems or cloud computing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in satellite remote sensing, big geospatial data.

  • Experience with Github/Gitlab.

  • Strong programming skills in Python, Linux, and shell script languages for data processing and visualization of simulation.

  • Ability to analyze and diagnose the impacts of extreme weather systems such as extreme rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones.

Salary Range

$65,000

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
