Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan in accordance with statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession. Works collaboratively with the psychiatrist, psychologist, medical and counseling providers and others to provide patient assessment, diagnose and formulate treatment plans, prescribe medications, order laboratory tests, interpret test results, provide patient education, prepare medical records and refer patients for inpatient care in accordance with statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession. The Psychiatrist NP works under the Director of Student Health Services.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for contacting and doing intake for Covid Positive students, making sure they are following isolation requirements, communicating with the CARE team the needs of the student, and discharging from Isolation.
  • Provides patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans in accordance with statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession
  • Provided Psychiatric health services, education, counseling and emotional support.
  • Refers patients for inpatient or outside community care, as necessary.
  • Order laboratory tests, interprets and explains the test results to patients.
  • Provides patient education regarding medication, risks, benefits and reasonable outcome expectations.
  • Assist in emergency management and crisis response services to students in collaboration with CAPS and SHS staff.
  • Working with other members of the CARE team to coordinate student care, referrals, Care Management and hospital/ER and/or Psychiatric Hold discharge follow up.
  • Communicates with patients and engages in follow up as necessary.
  • Oversee and monitor psychotropic medication.
  • Provides psychotherapy and integrative therapy interventions.
  • Delegates appropriately and coordinates duties/activities of health care team members.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning.
  • Participates regularly in staff development activities for department personnel.
  • Participates in department Performance Improvement activities.
  • Participates in program review and student learning activities as requested.
  • Identifies and solves problems effectively.
  • Demonstrates a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and all members of the University community.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track and convey information.
  • Facilitate health education both individually and to groups on campus as assigned.
  • Collaborates with director and supervising physician to establish and implement clinical policies and procedures.
  • Seeks opportunities to promote professional and personal growth through available academic facilities and continuing education activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Practitioner.
  • Possess and maintain an active licensure in the State of California as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Possess and maintain a current National Certification as a Psychiatric Nurse.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Up- to-date Immunizations
  • Clinical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Clinical experience in Psychiatric Care.
  • Experience providing nursing care in a college or university setting.
  • Experience working with a diverse population and a wide range of mental and physical diagnoses
  • Ability to teach in an informal workshop setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated through the ability to establish and maintain effective working with other departments within the university.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
Physical Requirements

Work Environment/ Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in clinical or office environment, with some outreach performed outdoors or on other campuses. Work is generally performed during standard business hours. May be required to work non-business hours. Moderate travel, including possible travel to the Sacramento and San Francisco campuses as needed.
Valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range
$80.00 - $82.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
