University of Wisconsin–Madison is Hiring an Assistant Director of Investigations Near Madison, WI

Job Summary:

The Office of Compliance advances compliance with applicable laws and policies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We collaborate with University partners to minimize compliance risk and promote ethical conduct throughout the University. In response to the newly expanded Title IX regulations, increased Title VI enforcement, new digital accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other related federal compliance mandates, the Office of Compliance is conducting a search for an Assistant Director of Investigations.
This is a new leadership role in the Office of Compliance and reports to the Associate Director of Civil Rights Compliance & Title IX Coordinator. The Assistant Director of Investigations will have direct oversight and supervision of the investigative function of the Office of Compliance, which currently includes protected-class discrimination investigations, including sexual misconduct, disability accommodation related investigations, and complaints of violations of UW-Madison's Hostile & Intimidating Behavior Policy. The Assistant Director will supervise approximately 7 investigators, accepting, approving and assigning investigations, and ensuring files are up to date. The Assistant Director will also review and approve Notice of Investigations, Initial Investigative Reports and Final Investigative Reports, and conduct overflow investigations as necessary. To facilitate institutional consistency, the Assistant Director will oversee training of external investigators as needed, and maintain templates and general documents for internal and broader institutional investigative use. This role also serves as the institutional contact for matters involving Office of Compliance-managed investigations, including pre- and post-investigation consultation with units navigating related concerns. Additionally, the Assistant Director will serve as deputy to the Associate Director, supporting the unit and engaging in projects and duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

Directs compliance policy creation, decision-making, and program; and acts as an institutional compliance lead. Responds to auditors on internal compliance audits to ensure compliance with institutional policies and/or laws and regulations. Coordinates with other institutional compliance programs to ensure efficiency and communicate challenges to senior leadership.
  • 25% Directs strategic planning initiatives and creates unit objectives and goals to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.
  • 10% Serves as the unit liaison to institutional stakeholder groups providing organizational information and represents the interests of the unit
  • 5% Develops and audits the unit budget and compliance reports in accordance with established rules and regulations
  • 20% Supports Associate Director. Ensures proper investigative procedures are followed, and engages in project and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:
- At least 5 years professional experience investigating and resolving civil, criminal, discrimination, or employment complaints, or related professional experience.
Preferred:
- Experience in higher education, government, or regulatory compliance setting
- Supervisory experience
A successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills:
- High level of organization
- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
- Ability to create a supportive working environment for staff
- Expertise in investigative best-practices in the areas of protected-class discrimination, sexual misconduct, employment, and/or disability accommodations
- Experience editing and reviewing professional, investigative, and/or compliance documents, including identifying proper citations, preferred

Full Time: 100%
This position is required to work primarily on-site at Bascom Hall on the UW-Madison campus. Majority remote or out-of-state work is not available for this position.
