Research Scientist, Asst - Wyoming Bat Hub Coordinator

JOB PURPOSE:

Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.

The Wyoming Bat Hub Coordinator will be responsible for facilitating the transfer of an existing statewide NABat stationary acoustics project from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to coordination of NABat acoustics projects based in the Bernard Research Lab at the University of Wyoming. While working with existing collaborators, the Coordinator will maintain the current level of stationary acoustic monitoring, while working to develop monitoring in underrepresented areas as well as build efficiencies into the program. Partners in the project include state, regional, and federal biologists, university researchers, among others. The Coordinator will also work closely with undergraduate and graduate researchers within the Bernard Research Lab to develop analyses based on acoustic data, as well as based on information needs from various partners. This is a highly collaborative position, serving as the point of connection between multiple partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Works with government, industry, non-government organizations, and the scientific community to understand the knowledge needs of the natural resource management system.
• Engaging partners, collaborators, clients, and end-users in dialogue about the potential benefits of bat biodiversity programs, scientific infrastructure, data and knowledge products.
• Develops relationships and provides feedback to clients related to the status of their bat biodiversity projects.
• Develops a shared vision and understanding among and across bat project partners and project teams.
• Fosters and maintains an ongoing relationship with the Bernard Research Lab and Wyoming Game and Fish Department to ensure working knowledge of advancements in bat programming.

Provides support and expertise related to the collaborative planning and implementation of bat biodiversity and conservation programs across a breadth of topics that may vary over time:

• Develops and manages project work plans that support the information needs of the North American Bat Monitoring Program.
• Ensures the successful completion of work plans on time and on budget through effective project management, including tracking deliverables and interdependencies, breaking down and prioritizing tasks, ensuring open lines of communication across the project teams, and coordinating frequent team meetings and discussions.
• Supports clarification of project roles and responsibilities, identification of resources and delegation of tasks.
• Develops relationships with appropriate collaborators.
• Coordinates independent scientific review of project products as required.
• Carries out field work as necessary.
• Compiles, processes, and submits data to the North American Bat Monitoring Program in an efficient and timely manner each year.
• Researches new options for funding and directs the application processes.

Works independently, with partners, senior leadership, technicians, and project collaborators to conduct necessary project work:

• Schedules, organizes and facilitates project meetings, including tracking and following up with project team members on action items.
• Maintains project documentation.
• Prepares and maintains field equipment.
• Identifies issues and leads teams through problem solving.

Facilitates direct and indirect understanding of knowledge among WGFD, Federal Biologists, Indigenous communities, and the public:

• Provides summaries of bat projects across jurisdictions.
• Communicates strengths and limitations of data products.
• Communicates project outcomes in written and oral form to non-technical and technical audiences, including peer-reviewed publications.
• Supports communication and reporting initiatives.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on UW's Casper campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• MSc degree in natural science, ecology, geography, biological sciences or related discipline OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Experience in ultrasonic detector operation to record bat echolocation, e.g., Pettersson, Titley, Wildlife Acoustic
• Experience in processing, analyzing, and manually reviewing call files to verify species identification especially within the West using Sonobat and Kaleidoscope software
• Experience gathering, compiling, and analyzing data using statistical methods, including a working knowledge of GIS (e.g., ArcGIS or generating maps in R).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference given to those with:

• Commitment to the Bernard Research Lab's values;
• Relevant education and experience (knowledge and experience with North American Bat Monitoring Program, bat bioacoustics, biodiversity, ecosystems, and/or forestry);
• Direct experience managing multi-partner, multi-year projects;
• Experience in project or product management;
• Long-term career interest in promoting bat research and long-term monitoring efforts;
• Self motivated and ability to motivate others;
• Ability to juggle multiple competing priorities in a fast paced, dynamic work environment;

• Experience submitting data to the North American Bat Monitoring Program;
• Formal project management training and experience using project management tools/software;
• Informal or formal leadership experience;
• Experience conducting and/or using data from field-based monitoring programs.
• Experience or expertise in the development of data collection applications.
