JOB PURPOSE:
The Science Initiative is seeking a temporary lecturer to teach Advanced Biochemistry (MOLB 4600/5600) in the Fall 2024 semester. This is an in-person, on-campus position.
Advanced Biochemistry is a 3-credit course delivered in a traditional classroom setting with a combination of didactic lectures and an active learning component. The course comprises both undergraduate and graduate students at about a 50:50 ratio, totaling on average some 25-35 students. The course explores fundamental concepts in biochemistry, ranging from how energy is produced at the cellular level to a molecular understanding of how that energy is used in transfer genetic information from genes to proteins. It begins by learning about how proteins, specifically enzymes, function to facilitate reactions in cells. After exploring energy metabolism in cells, topics delve into the enzymatic processes that control (i) how nucleic acid building blocks are assembled into polymers of DNA, (ii) how specific stretches of DNA are selectively copied into RNA, (iii) how the sequence of RNAs is translated into proteins, and ultimately (iv) how these proteins end up where they are supposed to be in the cell. Along the way, several seminal experiments that have led to our current understanding about the remarkable biochemical processes shared by most living things are introduced.
