Job Details

Job Location: 177 Myrtle Avenue - Brooklyn, NY
Salary Range: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 Salary

Program Overview: University Settlement partners with 40,000 New Yorkers on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn every year to build on their strengths as they achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. Launched in 2014, the Crisis Management System (CMS) is a partnership of more than 70 organizations that promote peace, community stewardship of public safety, and healing in the neighborhoods most affected by gun violence in NYC. Utilizing the globally recognized Cure Violence model, which is an evidence-based public health approach to responding to gun violence through credible messengers who identify and engage individuals most likely to be involved in gun violence and to defuse conflicts before they escalate. The CMS program will service the 88th precinct area of Brooklyn including the Ingersoll, Whitman and Farragut housing developments to be the frontline in preventing and interrupting conflicts that may lead to gun violence and retaliation in real time.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify individuals at high risk of involvement in shootings and serious violence in the service area partnering with local law enforcement and through community members
  • Engage high-risk individuals in mentoring sessions and activities to understand and reject violent impulses and set positive life goals.
  • Build and maintain a caseload of 10-15 high-risk program participants, providing guidance and support to help them reach their goals.
  • Develop and implement risk reduction plans for each participant on the caseload.
  • Maintain regular contact with program participants through in-person and telephone/video interactions.
  • Provide referrals and assist with program/service enrollment to external resources.
  • Conduct community outreach individually and as a team member, building strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
  • Conduct daily community canvassing to establish program presence, understand conflicts, and engage at-risk individuals.
  • Coordinate an immediate strategic response with the team when shootings and conflicts occur.
  • Work flexible hours, including late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of daily activity and timely data entry into required reporting tools.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions coordinated and required by OPGV.
  • Interact with Credible Clinician as needed.
  • Other related duties within the scope of the position as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (preferred), however candidates with some college and a proven track record of working with vulnerable, high-risk and/or opportunity youth and young adults will be considered.
  • At least two year experience working with vulnerable, high-risk and/or opportunity youth and young adults ages 16 to 24 required
  • Personal or professional Experience working with gang-involvement or gun related violence preferred
  • Must have an understanding of, sensitivity and commitment to working with youth and families that have experienced gun-related trauma
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in data entry and documentation.
  • Familiarity with community outreach and building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of violent intervention strategies and resources.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and provide guidance in challenging situations.
  • As required by the contract candidate must: 1) clear through hiring panel comprised of program and community partners; 2) complete a criminal background check; and 3) submit to drug testing and agree to periodic drug testing as part of a program of random testing or for cause
